Xiao Jianzhuang , Yu Caihua , Xiao Xuwen , Ding Tao , Zhang Yong

Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 5,   Pages 210-221 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.07.029

Abstract:
The reclamation of construction solid wastes is crucial for the high-quality development of the construction industry and it is urgent to further improve the utilization rate of the construction solid wastes to achieve the carbon peaking and carbon neutralization goals. Waste waterproof materials are an important component of the construction solid wastes; however, research on the utilization of these materials is almost blank in China. As calculated in this study, the total output of waterproof materials in China was 2.983 × 1010 m2 during 2005‒2021 and that of waterproof membranes was 1.89 × 1010 m2, indicating that waterproof membranes are the main body for waterproof material recycling. In response to the national green and low-carbon development situation, a utilization path for “reducing, reusing, and recycling” (3R) the waterproof membranes is proposed as well as a high-performance waterproof membrane research and development concept that combines waterproof membrane “genome”, multi-scale/multi-scenario analysis, and machine learning prediction. A waterproof membrane reuse mode with system disassembly as the core is clarified as well as a recycling strategy with classification, gradation, and deconstruction as the core. Moreover, the in-depth research and innovative application of fully recycled waterproof membranes and additive manufacturing technology should be promoted. The transformation of recycled waterproof membranes to products and the engineering application of these products are major challenges to be addressed in the future, which requires joint efforts of the management departments, academia, and industry.

Turning Industrial Residues into Resources: An Environmental Impact Assessment of Goethite Valorization Article

Andrea Di Maria, Karel Van Acker

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 421-429 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.05.008

Abstract:

Goethite is a metals-rich residue that occurs during zinc production. The feasibility of metal recovery from goethite has been demonstrated, but is not economically viable on an industrial scale. Therefore, goethite is landfilled with considerable economic costs and environmental risks. The goal of this study is to evaluate the environmental performance of a new valorization strategy for goethite residues from zinc production, with the aims of: ① recovering the valuable zinc contained in the goethite and ② avoiding the landfilling of goethite by producing a clean byproduct. The presented goethite valorization strategy consists of a sequence of two processes: ① plasma fuming and ② inorganic polymerization of the fumed slag. Plasma fuming recovers the valuable metals by fuming the goethite. The metals-free fumed slag undergoes a process of inorganic polymerization to form inorganic polymers, that can be used as a novel building material, as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete. Lifecycle assessment (LCA) is used to compare the environmental performance of the inorganic polymer with the environmental performances of equivalent OPC-based concrete. The LCA results show the tradeoff between the environmental burdens of the fuming process and inorganic polymerization versus the environmental benefits of metal recovery, OPC concrete substitution, and the avoidance of goethite landfilling. The goethite-based inorganic polymers production shows better performances in several environmental impact categories, thanks to the avoided landfilling of goethite. However, in other environmental impact categories, such as global warming, the goethite valorization is strongly affected by the high-energy requirements of the plasma-fuming process, which represent the environmental hotspots of the proposed goethite recycling scheme. The key elements toward the sustainability of goethite valorization have been identified, and include the use of a clean electric mix, more effective control of the fumed gas emissions, and a reduced use of fumed slag through increased efficiency of the inorganic polymerization process.

Du Xiangwan,Liu Xiaolong,Ge Qin,Jiang Lingling and Cui Leilei

Strategic Study of CAE 2017, Volume 19, Issue 4,   Pages 119-123 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2017.04.019

Abstract:

The large amount of solid waste in China, if not properly handled, will cause serious environmental problems, lead to a waste of resources, and bring about adverse effects on society. Solid waste is a misplaced resource; thus, reducing or resource utilization solid waste to build a "no-waste society" will yield significant environmental, social, and economic benefits. Based on an analysis of significant existing problems hindering the construction of a "no-waste society" in China, along with feasibility studies, this paper suggests that it is necessary to promote the resource utilization of solid waste by piloting "no-waste city," from which to build a "no-waste society." Other strategic suggestions such as strengthening the top-level design, consolidating a foundation, defining stage objectives, and increasing policy support are also proposed in this paper.
