Strategic Study of CAE 2017, Volume 19, Issue 2,   Pages 68-71 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2017.02.011

Abstract:

China is facing great difficulties and challenges in its quest to transition from the low end to the high end of the medical devices industry. In the burgeoning field of new wearable medical devices, we are encountering many more opportunities to catch up with the leaders in the field, although challenges still exist. The Chinese Academy of Engineering recently organized a major advisory project: the National Health and Medical & Health Industry Development Strategy. Research on the Development Strategies of Medical Devices and New Wearable Medical Devices is one of the eight key subjects in this project. As a result, this paper studies and systematically analyzes the subject of research into medical devices, and the requirements, characteristics, focus, and politics of this field have been assessed. This paper reports on the results of this project regarding research into medical devices and new wearable devices. This paper includes suggestions and proposals to clarify critical issues affecting the development of wearable medical devices.

Abstract: Until a safe and effective vaccine to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus is developed and available for the global population, preventive measures, such as wearable tracking and monitoring systems supported by Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures, are valuable tools for containing the pandemic. In this review paper we analyze innovative wearable systems for limiting the virus spread, early detection of the first symptoms of the coronavirus disease COVID-19 infection, and remote monitoring of the health conditions of infected patients during the quarantine. The attention is focused on systems allowing quick user screening through ready-to-use hardware and software components. Such sensor-based systems monitor the principal vital signs, detect symptoms related to COVID-19 early, and alert patients and medical staff. Novel for complying with social distancing rules and limiting interpersonal contagion (such as smart masks) are investigated and analyzed. In addition, an overview of implantable devices for monitoring the effects of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system is presented. Then we report an overview of tracing strategies and technologies for containing the based on IoT technologies, , and cloud computing. In detail, we demonstrate the potential of radio frequency based signal technology, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and radio frequency identification (RFID), often combined with Apps and cloud technology. Finally, critical analysis and comparisons of the different discussed solutions are presented, highlighting their potential and providing new insights for developing innovative tools for facing future pandemics.

Cross-industry standard test method developments: from manufacturing to wearable robots Review

Roger BOSTELMAN, Elena MESSINA, Sebti FOUFOU

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2017, Volume 18, Issue 10,   Pages 1447-1457 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1601316

Abstract: Manufacturing robotics is moving towards human-robot collaboration with light duty robots being used side by side with workers. Similarly, exoskeletons that are both passive (spring and counterbalance forces) and active (motor forces) are worn by humans and used to move body parts. Exoskeletons are also called ‘wearable robots’ when they are actively controlled using a computer and integrated sensing. Safety standards now allow, through risk assessment, both manufacturing and wearable robots to be used. However, performance standards for both systems are still lacking. Ongoing research to develop standard test methods to assess the performance of manufacturing robots and emergency response robots can inspire similar test methods for exoskeletons. This paper describes recent research on performance standards for manufacturing robots as well as search and rescue robots. It also discusses how the performance of wearable robots could benefit from using the same test methods.

Artificial muscles for wearable assistance and rehabilitation Review

Tian-yun DONG, Xiang-liang ZHANG, Tao LIU

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2018, Volume 19, Issue 11,   Pages 1303-1315 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1800618

Abstract:

Traditional exoskeletons have made considerable contributions to people in terms of providing wearable assistance and rehabilitation. However, exoskeletons still have some disadvantages, such as being heavy, bulky, stiff, noisy, and having a fixed center of rotation that can be a burden on elders and patients with weakened muscles. Conversely, artificial muscles based on soft, smart materials possess the attributes of being lightweight, compact, highly flexible, and have mute actuation, for which they are considered to be the most similar to natural muscles. Among these materials, dielectric elastomer (DE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel exhibit considerable actuation strain, high actuation stress, high response speed, and long life span, which give them great potential for application in wearable assistance and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, there is very little research on the application of these two materials in these fields. In this review, we first introduce the working principles of the DE and PVC gel separately. Next, we summarize the DE materials and the preparation of PVC gel. Then, we review the electrodes and self-sensing systems of the two materials. Lastly, we present the initial applications of these two materials for wearable assistance and rehabilitation.

Development Path of Offshore Drilling Equipment in China

Liu Jian

Strategic Study of CAE 2020, Volume 22, Issue 6,   Pages 40-48 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2020.06.006

Abstract:

China has made achievements in offshore drilling equipment, and it can now develop the shallow-water drilling rigs independently. However, as far as deep-water drilling equipment is concerned, there still exists a big gap between China and the international advanced level, which inevitably hinders the deep-water oilfield development in the country. To accelerate the development of China’s offshore drilling equipment, this study first analyzes the development status of the equipment in China and abroad from three aspects: shallow-water drilling machine, deep-water drilling machine, and new-type marine drilling machine; it then summarizes the development status in China and the gap between China and the international advanced level. Subsequently, it studies the key technologies for realizing the localization of the deep-water drilling equipment, and proposes corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. We propose that China should focus its efforts on making breakthroughs in the design, materials, technology, inspection, and sea test of the deep-water drilling rigs. To clarify the development path of the offshore drilling equipment, China should establish and improve the standards and specifications regarding offshore drilling rigs; develop different types of deep-water drilling equipment at different stages and by different levels; establish an integrated testing platform and a sea test base; strengthen inter-industry cooperation; develop this sector in an innovation-driven mode; and promote diversified, serial, automated, and intelligent development.

Strategic Study of CAE 2020, Volume 22, Issue 6,   Pages 143-150 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2020.06.019

Abstract:

Special equipment are important for the economic and societal development of a country. Implementing intelligent manufacturing in the special equipment field could facilitate the transformation and upgrades of the special equipment manufacturing industry of China, and it is also an essential component for the China Manufacturing 2025 plan. In this article, we first analyze the characteristics and current status of special equipment in China and summarize the demand for intelligent manufacturing of special equipment. Then we propose some measures and development ideas for promoting the special equipment manufacturing industry from big to strong. We propose that the guiding ideology should be parallel development; the Industry 2.0, Industry 3.0, and Industry 4.0 should be promoted in parallel in the special equipment industry. The development of intelligent manufacturing of special equipment should focus on product traceability, intelligent quality management, and real-time monitoring of dynamic risks. Based on this, intelligent connection is introduced as a technology path for developing intelligent manufacturing of special equipment, and the concept of intelligent connection is further analyzed. Furthermore, the key tasks for future development are building an intelligent connection network of special equipment and developing intelligent applications.
