Comparison of indicators for agricultural green development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and RESEARCH ARTICLE

While agricultural green development (AGD) is highly recognized and has become a national strategy in China, it is imperative to bridge the knowledge gaps between AGD and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to evaluate the contribution of AGD to meeting the SDGs. The first aim of this study was to compare the AGD goals and indicators with those of the SDGs so as to identify their relationship. The next aim was to examine the historical evolution of AGD indicators and analyze the gaps between the current status of various indicators and their benchmarks. Limiting factors were identified in China’s transition toward AGD. These findings reveal that the indicators of AGD align with those of the SDGs, but have greater specificity to the context in China and are more quantifiable. There has been a significant increase per capita calorie and protein intakes in China, as well as a notable rise in agricultural output per unit of arable land and rural incomes from 1980 to the 2010s. However, these achievements have been accompanied by a high resource use and environmental pollution, highlighting the need for a more sustainable, environmentally responsible agriculture in China.

A collaborative approach for urban underground space development toward sustainable development goals

摘要: The utilization of urban underground space (UUS) offers an effective solution to urban problems but may also negatively affect urban development. Therefore, UUS development needs better concerted guidelines to coordinate various urban systems and the multiple components of the underground world. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which should be viewed as important yardsticks for UUS development, do not explicitly mention urban underground space, although many of them are affected by both the positive and negative consequences of its development. To fill this gap, this review lays the foundations of relevant UUS concepts and uses exemplary cases to reveal that 11 out of 17 SDGs can be linked with UUS uses. These linkages also manifest that land administration, integrated planning, architectural design, and construction technology are critical dimensions for increasing the contributions of UUS to the realization of SDGs. To achieve multi-disciplinary synergies among these four critical dimensions, a collaborative approach framework based on spatial data infrastructure is required. Thus, this work provides academics and practitioners with a holistic view of sustainable UUS development.

CROP-LIVESTOCK INTEGRATION FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN CHINA: THE HISTORY OF STATE POLICY GOALS, REFORM

This paper examines the historical evolution of crop-livestock integration in China with a specific focus on its role in mitigating non-point source pollution. Extensive examination of existing literature has unearthed the roots of crop-livestock integration dating back to the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 to 771 BCE), ultimately culminating in a multifaceted and intricately interwoven system of rural development policies seen in contemporary China. This paper identifies and characterizes four distinct stages in the historical trajectory of crop-livestock integration: the era of self-sufficient subsistence production in traditional times (1046 BCE to 1948); the period where crop-livestock integration emerged as a pivotal strategy for augmenting grain and meat production under collectivist policies (1949‒1977); the phase marked by the industrialization and expansion of the livestock sector during the early years of economic reforms (1978‒2011); and the present era in which crop-livestock integration is harnessed as a mechanism for pollution control and ecological preservation in contemporary China (2012 to present). This paper illuminates the diverse contributions of crop-livestock integration in different epochs of rural development within China, which contributes to a nuanced and more theoretically grounded comprehension of circular agriculture. This understanding has the potential to be leveraged to promote sustainable rural development in broader contexts.

Concept and requirements of sustainable development in bridge engineering

摘要: The concept of sustainability is described in this paper using a single sustainable principle, two goals of sustainable development, three dimensions of sustainable engineering, four sustainable requirements and five phases of sustainable construction. Four sustainable requirements and their practice in China are discussed in particular. The safe reliability of bridges is first compared with the events of bridge failure in China and in the rest of the world and followed by structural durability, including the cracking of concrete cable-stayed bridges, deflection of concrete girder bridges and fatigue cracks of orthotropic steel decks. With respect to functional adaptability, lateral wind action on vehicles and its improvement are introduced regarding a sea-crossing bridge located in a typhoon-prone area. The Chinese practice of using two double main span suspension bridges and a twin parallel deck cable-stayed bridge is presented in discussing the final sustainable requirement: capacity extensibility.

Proposing a development framework for sustainable architecture, engineering, and construction industry

摘要: China’s architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry needs a clear and sustainable development roadmap. Drawing inspiration from speeches delivered at a seminar hosted by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and extensive literature research on Chinese policies, this article presents a summary of the current trends in the AEC industry in four dimensions: industrialization as the foundation, intelligence as the enabler, lean management as the strategy, and green development as the goal. These four dimensions are intricately interconnected and rooted in multiple disciplines. The article provides a detailed review of the current practices, challenges, and future directions associated with each dimension. Additionally, ten grand challenges were proposed to stimulate discussions on the future of the AEC industry. This article offers an overarching understanding of the AEC industry and presents a four-dimension framework for sustainable development, which can be valuable for AEC practitioners.

Increasing significance of advanced physical/chemical processes in the development and application ofsustainable wastewater treatment systems

摘要: The awareness of the problem of the scarcity of water of high quality has strongly changed the approach of wastewater treatment. Currently, there is an increasing need for the beneficial reuse of treated wastewater and to recover valuable products and energy from the wastewater. Because microbiological treatment methods are, only to a limited part, able to satisfy these needs, the role and significance of physical/chemical processes in wastewater treatment are gaining more and more interest. The specific future role and aim of the various physical/chemical treatment processes can be categorized in five groups: improvement of the performance of microbiological treatment processes, achievement of the high quality required for reuse of the effluent, recovery of valuable components and energy from the wastewater for beneficial reuse, desalination of brackish water and seawater, and treatment of concentrated liquid or solid waste residues produced in a wastewater treatment process. Development of more environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment chains in which physical/chemical processes play a crucial role, also requires application of process control and modeling strategies. This is briefly introduced by the elaboration of treatment scenarios for three specific wastewaters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE ON “HORTICULTURE RESEARCH FOR GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EDITORIAL

Horticulture is the science and technology of intensively cultivating plants for food, comfort and beautification purposes. Horticulture comprises a wide range of plants and crops including fruit and nut trees, vegetables, edible fungi, and ornamental plants, as well as tea plants also categorized as horticultural crops in some countries including China. Horticultural products are of great value and serve as important dietary sources of antioxidants, vitamins and mineral nutrients for human nutrition and health. Development of a green and sustainable horticulture, producing more and safer fruit and vegetables, is a prerequisite for meeting the ever-increasing demand of the growing human population.

In contrast to other field crops or model plants, horticulture comprises a diverse group of plants ranging from annual to perennial crops that are primarily grown for fresh consumption, which means their cultivation and breeding methods are quite different from other plants, in particular, in somatic variation or bud-sport, grafting propagation, flowering regulation, organogenetic development and postharvest storage systems. Horticultural research mainly focuses on breeding, cultivation and postharvest production related biological questions, to generate knowledge beneficial for cultivar improvement for better quality and year-round supply, to understand biological basis and regulation of quality formation and maintenance. However, owing to the long juvenile period, polyembryony (such as in citrus), large canopy of perennial horticultural plants, especially for fruit crops, basic and applied research has progressed slowly over the years.

Recently, with the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing technology, research in horticulture has entered the new ‘omics’ era. A large number of datasets for horticultural plants obtained through multi-omics including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, are now available, which provides many clues for understanding the molecular basis of agronomically important traits. To date, high-quality draft genome sequences have been accomplished for more than 30 horticultural plant species. Based on these reference genomes, resequencing data and newly developed molecular markers, numerous key candidate loci/genes controlling major agronomical traits of perennial horticultural plants have been identified through BSA and GWAS analysis of genetic populations, using these strategies that have been successfully and widely applied to field crops and model plants. One prime example is the genetic locus responsible for citrus polyembryony, which was recently narrowed to an 80-kb region containing 11 candidate genes by comparative genomic analysis of natural citrus populations, identifying CitRWPas the key candidate gene controlling polyembryony. This approach was also applied to QTL mapping and candidate gene mining for fruit quality (including sugar, acid, TSS and carotenoid), fruit shape, fruit size, fruit weight traits in perennial horticultural plants, such as apple, citrus, grape, peach and pear. Also, recent research on the exploitation and utilization of short-juvenile germplasm, like mini-citrus as a model plant, has facilitated functional genomics of fruit crops. A number of functional genes and their molecular mechanisms were successively identified, thereby accelerating the breeding and genetic improvement of main cultivars.

Considering the rapid progress of horticulture research and its indispensable contribution to human health, Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering (FASE) is launching a special issue “Horticulture Research for Green and Sustainable Development”. We invited experts with rich experience in studies of fruit crops, vegetables, ornamentals and tea plants to share their new research achievements and perspectives. A total of 11 articles are included in this special issue. Its research findings cover QTL mapping and key gene mining for maesil weeping traits (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2020379) and tea flavonoid metabolism (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021382), functional identification of apple anthocyanin biosynthetic regulator MdMYB1 in controlling ascorbic acid accumulation (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2020367), trifoliate orange PtLEA7 protein (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2020368) and apple SUMO E3 Ligase MdSIZ1 (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021388) in modulating drought tolerance, tomato D1 protein turnover in photoprotection under sub-high temperature and high light conditions (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021383), and tomato FNC gene in determining the fruit netted-cracking phenotype (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2020374). Electrical signals have been reported to be widely generated in response to various environmental changes and are recognized as vital for plant defense, Hu et al. investigated the characteristics of herbivory/wound-elicited electrical signal transduction in tomato, found GLR3.3 and GLR3.5 function as key regulators in leaflet-to-leaflet electrical signal transduction and JA accumulation (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021395). Ploidy manipulation via diploid by tetraploid interploidy crosses is widely used for breeding triploid seedless cultivars. Xia et al. (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021385) produced 182 triploid and 36 tetraploid plants between the diploid Orah mandarin and three allotetraploid somatic hybrids, and further revealed the mechanism of tetraploid hybrids formation by the fertilization of 2n megagametophytes via second division restitution. Two reviews are also included in this special issue. Ji et al. reviewed the recent advances in the regulation of climacteric fruit ripening in terms of phytohormones, transcription factors and epigenetic modifications (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021386). Makkumrai et al. compared the planting locations, climates, cultivation systems, orchard managements, fruit characteristics, and main metabolites between Chinese and Thailand pummelos, highlighted the potential resources for pummelo breeding and genetic improvement (https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FASE-2021391).

As the guest editors, we thank all the authors and reviewers for their great contributions to this special issue on “Horticulture Research for Green and Sustainable Development”, and the FASE editorial team for their great support. We hope the research findings in this issue represent the main concerns of horticulture researchers and producers, and will be beneficial to quality promotion and cultivar improvement of horticultural crops and ensure a green and sustainable development of horticultural industry.

Supporting factors model for the sustainable step development of supply chain: An empirical study from

摘要: The ongoing stability of supply chains faces significant challenges from trade protectionism, anti-globalization trends, and the COVID-19 pandemic. To remain resilient in this dynamic market environment, supply chains must evolve through iterative upgrades and transition to a higher level of sustainability, a process termed “step development.” The current literature, however, offers limited insights into achieving such step development in supply chain sustainability and its critical supporting elements. This study, grounded in theory, involved interviews with representatives from eight diverse Chinese enterprises. We introduce a model delineating supporting factors and a roadmap for Sustainable Step Development of Supply Chains (SSDSC). Our findings highlight three pivotal categories of support for SSDSC: institutional, technological, and social factors. Additionally, we observed that external influences in these categories positively modulate their internal counterparts. The study identifies industrial technology, digital intelligence technology, corporate responsibility, and stakeholder needs as key elements in this process. We conclude by offering theoretical and practical recommendations to foster SSDSC.

Optimizing nitrogen management in the food system for sustainable development: a case study of Quzhou REVIEW

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for food production. The rapid increase in population requires high inputs of N to meet the growing food demand. If not managed well, the substantial loss of N from the food system has multiple impacts on grain yield, air and water pollution, and the economic benefits of agricultural. Multi-objective (food security, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability) synergistic consideration of N management in the food system is still lacking. This study employed strategies for optimizing N management in the food system, using Quzhou County as a typical example on the North China Plain. Firstly, a food chain approach was adopted to understand drivers and reasons behind N losses from the food system. Secondly, a top-down approach was used to define multi-objective N management, taking into consideration food security, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability. Multi-objective N management aims to reduce N losses to the environment and increase N use efficiencies, while simultaneously increasing yields and economic benefits. Thirdly, 3R (reduce-retain-recycle) N management strategies were identified for specific crops and animals through a bottom-up approach and then analyzed the potential of these strategies to achieve the multi-objectives. Finally, there is a discussion of how to engage different stakeholders to promote the technologies implementation. This study provides new insights into the synergistic achievement of multi-objective N management in the food system and the development of environmentally-friendly agriculture.

Sustainable urban transportation development in China: A behavioral perspective

摘要: The rapid development of economics requires highly efficient and environment-friendly urban transportation systems. Such requirement presents challenges in sustainable urban transportation. The analysis and understanding of transportation-related behaviors provide one approach to dealing with complicated transportation activities. In this study, the management of traffic systems is divided into four levels with a structural and systematic perspective. Then, several special cases from the perspective of behavior, including purchasing behaviors toward new energy vehicles, choice behaviors toward green travel, and behavioral reactions toward transportation demand management policies, are investigated. Several management suggestions are proposed for transportation authorities to improve sustainable traffic management.
