Time reversal method for guided wave inspection in pipes

摘要： The application of the time reversal method in pipe-like structures based on finite element method (FEM) is investigated. A steel pipe model measuring 70 mm × 3.5 mm is used to analyze the reflection coefficient of the (0,2) mode with the time reversal process. Simulation results show that the time reversal array method is beneficial to the improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of a guided wave inspection system. As the intercepting window is widened, more energy is included in re-emitted signals, which leads to a large reflection coefficient of the (0,2) mode. In parallel, a circumferential locating method based on the time reversal method is described. The time reversal process used for guided wave inspection leads to the temporal and spatial focusing. When the time reversal signals are re-emitted, the angular profile obtained at the axial location of the defect can be used to determine the circumferential location of the defect. Except for a pipe with one defect, the circumferential locating method has been verified on another pipe model with two defects. Meanwhile, the elements number of the time reversal array has been discussed for enhancing the discrimination of the defect circumferential location.

Ant colony optimization in continuous problem

摘要： Based on the analysis of the basic ant colony optimization and optimum problem in a continuous space, an ant colony optimization (ACO) for continuous problem is constructed and discussed. The algorithm is efficient and beneficial to the study of the ant colony optimization in a continuous space.

Beneficial effects of preventive cholecystectomy in patients with hepatic cancer

摘要： There is no conclusive answer to the question whether excising gall bladder is helpful to the patient with hepatic cancer. The survival rate of patients with hepatic cancer for more than two years has been increased, and the incidence of complications of cholecystitis and gall stone are relatively higher among these patients, which may seriously complicate treatment of advanced hepatic cancer and decrease quality of life. The researchers conducted a prospective clinical investigation from 2002 to 2006 to assess the clinical significance of preventive cholecystectomy in patients with hepatic cancer. One hundred and eighteen cases of postoperative patients with hepatic cancer, who survived for more than two years, were followed up. Based on whether cholecystectomy was performed, the patients were divided into two groups including 48 cases with cholecystectomy and 70 cases with cholecyst reserved. The two-year morbidity of gall stone and morbidity of pain in the right upper abdomen of cholecyst reservation group were 54.29% and 68.57%, respectively, obviously higher than 0.00% and 20.83% of cholecystectomy group. Mainly for those treated with transcatheter arterial chemo-embolization, the morbidity of gall stone was 86.67% ( < 0.01). Therefore, preventive cholecystectomy is strongly recommended during hepatectomy to decrease the incidence of chronic cholecystitis and gall stone, especially for those whose chemotherapy and embolization will be carried out through hepatic artery and portal vein.

Increasing significance of advanced physical/chemical processes in the development and application of sustainable wastewater treatment systems

摘要： The awareness of the problem of the scarcity of water of high quality has strongly changed the approach of wastewater treatment. Currently, there is an increasing need for the beneficial reuse of treated wastewater and to recover valuable products and energy from the wastewater. Because microbiological treatment methods are, only to a limited part, able to satisfy these needs, the role and significance of physical/chemical processes in wastewater treatment are gaining more and more interest. The specific future role and aim of the various physical/chemical treatment processes can be categorized in five groups: improvement of the performance of microbiological treatment processes, achievement of the high quality required for reuse of the effluent, recovery of valuable components and energy from the wastewater for beneficial reuse, desalination of brackish water and seawater, and treatment of concentrated liquid or solid waste residues produced in a wastewater treatment process. Development of more environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment chains in which physical/chemical processes play a crucial role, also requires application of process control and modeling strategies. This is briefly introduced by the elaboration of treatment scenarios for three specific wastewaters.

Beneficial metabolic activities of inflammatory cytokine interleukin 15 in obesity and type 2 diabetes

摘要：

In obesity, chronic inflammation is believed to induce insulin resistance and impairs adipose tissue function. Although this view is supported by a large body of literature, it has been challenged by growing evidence that pro-inflammatory cytokines may favor insulin sensitivity through induction of energy expenditure. In this review article, interleukin 15 (IL-15) is used as a new example to explain the beneficial effects of the pro-inflammatory cytokines. IL-15 is secreted by multiple types of cells including macrophages, neutrophils and skeletal muscle cells. IL-15 expression is induced in immune cells by endotoxin and in muscle cells by physical exercise. Its transcription is induced by transcription factor NF-κB. IL-15 binds to its receptor that contains three different subunits (α, β and γ) to activate JAK/STAT, PI3K/Akt, IKK/NF-κB and JNK/AP1 pathways in cells. In the regulation of metabolism, IL-15 reduces weight gain without inhibiting food intake in rodents. IL-15 suppresses lipogenesis, stimulates brown fat function, improves insulin sensitivity through weight loss and energy expenditure. In human, circulating IL-15 is negatively associated with body weight. In the immune system, IL-15 stimulates proliferation and differentiation of T cells, NK cells, monocytes and neutrophils. In the anti-obesity effects of IL-15, T cells and NK cells are not required, but leptin receptor is required. In summary, evidence from human and rodents supports that the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-15 may enhance energy expenditure to protect the body from obesity and type 2 diabetes. The mechanism of IL-15 action remains to be fully uncovered in the regulation of energy expenditure.

Feasibility analysis of mixed-income housing in China

摘要： In this paper, it is demonstrated that mixed-income housing is a feasible and beneficial pattern nowadays. This pattern is propitious for good living and harmonious development of society. Based on practice, data are gathered from the field, and the social investment and social distance analysis of the social network theory are used from the perspective of cross-disciplinary fields. The hypothesis is tested and the feasible and beneficial characteristics of mixed-income housing are pointed out.

Research on the valveless piezoelectric pump with Y-shape pipes

摘要： A piezoelectric pump with its Y-shape elements is presented. Two Y-shape pipes are fixed outside the chamber serving as an inlet and outlet, with the chamber and a piezoelectric vibrator being the actor. The pump has the potential to be miniaturized and integrated. Eddies occurring in the Y-shape elements are smaller, which is beneficial for the transport of living cells or long-link macromolecules. In this paper, the structure of the pump is first presented. Then, the equations on the change in volume and the mean pressure in the chamber are established, as well as the relation between the flow rate and the working frequency of the piezoelectric vibrator. Moreover, the relation between the mean pressure in the chamber and the working frequency of the piezoelectric vibrator is established. Finally, experiments are carried out to test the characteristics of the pump and to verify the correction of the theory on this pump.

Hydrogen peroxide is correlated with browning in peach fruit stored at low temperature

摘要： The objective of this present research is to study the biological basis of browning in peach fruit during storage at low temperatures. After being immersed in 0 or 2mmol·L salicylic acid (SA) aqueous solution for 10min, peach fruit (Prunus persica L. cv. Hongtao) were stored at 10°C, 5°C or 0°C with or without shelf life at 25°C. During storage, the progress of browning, lipid per-oxidation, phenol content, activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO, E.C. 1.14.18.1) and guaiacol peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7), redox state of ascorbate and glutathione, as well as the content, location and metabolism of hydrogen peroxide (HO) in the fruit were examined. The results indicated that a decrease in HO content was correlated with browning, whereas phenol content and activities of PPO and POD were not correlated with the change in HO content. Moreover, HO content was influenced by different responses of antioxidants at different storage conditions. It was concluded that the main effect of HO on browning was to regulate its appearance and development as a signal molecule, and lower HO content was beneficial to browning.

Beneficial effect of arginine vasopressin on hemorrhagic shock through improving the vascular reactivity

摘要： The vascular reactivity and calcium sensitivity were decreased following hemorrhagic shock. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) was beneficial to endotoxic, infectious/septic and hemorrhagic shock. Our previous studies found that Rho kinase played an important role in the occurrence of calcium desensitization following shock. It was reported that AVP was with stimulation effect of Rho kinase. So we hypothesized that AVP might have beneficial effect on shock via activation of Rho kinase to regulate the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity. Hemorrhagic shock (40 mmHg for 2 h) Wistar rats were adopted to observe the effects of small dose of AVP on hemodynamics, 24-h survival rate, the pressor effect of norepinephrine (NE) and the contractility of superior mesenteric artery (SMA). Isolated SMAs from hemorrhagic shock rats were adopted to observe the effects of AVP on vascular reactivity and calcium sensitivity and its relationship to Rho kinase with an isolated organ perfusion system. The results show that AVP at the concentration of 0.1 U/kg and 0.4 U/kg significantly improved the hemodynamic parameters and the 24-h survival rate of hemorrhagic shock rats. Meanwhile, these dosages of AVP significantly increased the pressor effect of NE and the contractile response of SMA to NE. Y-27632 (3 ?g/kg), a Rho kinase specific inhibitor, abolished the beneficial effects of AVP. , the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity of SMA to calcium and NE were significantly decreased following hemorrhagic shock. AVP at the concentration of 0.5 nmol/L and 5 nmol/L significantly increased the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity. These effects of AVP were abolished by Y-27632 (10 ?mol/L). Taken together, the results suggest that AVP at 0.1 U/kg and 0.4 U/kg is beneficial to hemorrhagic shock by improving the vascular reactivity, which involves activation of Rho kinase.

Chromium steel from chromite ore processing residue----A valuable construction material from a waste

摘要： As species we humans generate excessive amounts of waste and hence for sustainability we should explore innovative ways to recover them. The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate an efficient and optimum way to recover chromium and iron from chromite ore processing residues (COPR) for the production of chrome steel and stainless steel. In Hudson County, New Jersey, there are more than two million tons of leftover COPR. Part of COPR was used as fill materials for construction sites, which spread the problem to a larger area. With high solubility along with their toxicity leached chromate from COPR is threatening the environment as well as human health. In this research, COPR was thermally treated to recover iron with chromium by applying techniques used in steel manufacturing. An extensive experimental program was performed using a Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) and bench scale tests to thermally treat the processed chromium contaminated soils with carbon and sand at varying temperatures and under reducing environment. The optimum chemical composition of COPR and additives to be used in the melts were evaluated based upon the thermodynamic properties of the mixture to ensure good phase separation, least amounts of iron and chromium oxides in the slag and minimum variability of final product (steel or iron with chromium). The impact of other oxides on the steel making process was evaluated to minimize the adverse impact on the process. The research demonstrated the feasibility of recovering a valuable construction material (chrome steel) from a waste (COPR).

Microbiome Engineering: A Promising Approach to Improve Coral Health

摘要： The world’s coral reefs are threatened by the cumulative impacts of global climate change and local stressors. Driven largely by a desire to understand the interactions between corals and their symbiotic microorganisms, and to use this knowledge to eventually improve coral health, interest in coral microbiology and the coral microbiome has increased in recent years. In this review, we summarize the role of the coral microbiome in maintaining a healthy metaorganism by providing nutrients, support for growth and development, protection against pathogens, and mitigation of environmental stressors. We explore the concept of coral microbiome engineering, that is, precise and controlled manipulation of the coral microbiome to aid and enhance coral resilience and tolerance in the changing oceans. Although coral microbiome engineering is clearly in its infancy, several recent breakthroughs indicate that such engineering is an effective tool for restoration and preservation of these valuable ecosystems. To assist with identifying future research targets, we have reviewed the common principles of microbiome engineering and its applications in improving human health and agricultural productivity, drawing parallels to where coral microbiome engineering can advance in the not-too-distant future. Finally, we end by discussing the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in the application of microbiome engineering in coral reefs and provide recommendations for future work.

在沙地治理中诞生的CO₂产业链 ——以毛乌素生物热电厂“三碳经济”模式为例

摘要：

文章介绍了在毛乌素沙地种植沙生灌木治理沙地吸收二氧化碳、用灌木枝条发电减排二氧化碳、以电厂余热和烟气养殖螺旋藻捕集二氧化碳的“三碳经济”产业链。该产业链极大地增强了生物质发电厂的活力，提高了农牧民营林治沙的积极性，显著带动了农牧民增收，并创造了巨大的生态效益。更为重要的是，该产业链实现了被动治沙到主动治沙的转变，在我国沙漠沙地治理的机制建设中也有重要价值。

复合镍基催化剂催化CO₂ 光热甲烷化反应中氧化铈和氧化钛的助催化作用 Article

摘要：

太阳能驱动二氧化碳(CO₂) 转化为燃料是解决CO₂ 减排和快速增长的世界能源需求的理想方案。本文利用光照辐射镍基负载催化剂床层引发加热效应以促进CO₂ 的转化，研究了不同组成的氧化铈-氧化钛复合氧化物载体及其对光热CO₂ 转化的影响。提高光热CO₂ 甲烷化活性的两个至关重要的因素分别是：①优化的镍颗粒负载对于高活性催化面积及用于加热催化床层的更高的光吸收能力是必需的；②载体上的缺陷位对于促进CO₂ 吸附及随后的活化是必需的。载体中的钛对维持掺杂氧化钛的氧化铈上的氧空位缺陷起着关键作用。当氧化铈和氧化钛混合比例理想时，再结合高光照吸收以及稳定的还原状态，有利于CO₂ 吸附及随后高效光热CO₂ 甲烷化反应的发生。
