Unusual global outbreak of monkeypox: what should we do?

摘要: Recently, monkeypox has become a global concern amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Monkeypox is an acute rash zoonosis caused by the monkeypox virus, which was previously concentrated in Africa. The re-emergence of this pathogen seems unusual on account of outbreaks in multiple nonendemic countries and the incline to spread from person to person. We need to revisit this virus to prevent the epidemic from getting worse. In this review, we comprehensively summarize studies on monkeypox, including its epidemiology, biological characteristics, pathogenesis, and clinical characteristics, as well as therapeutics and vaccines, highlighting its unusual outbreak attributed to the transformation of transmission. We also analyze the present situation and put forward countermeasures from both clinical and scientific research to address it.

Do right PLS and do PLS right: A critical review of the application of PLS-SEM in construction management

摘要: Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is a modern multivariate analysis technique with a demonstrated ability to estimate theoretically established cause-effect relationship models. This technique has been increasingly adopted in construction management research over the last two decades. Accordingly, a critical review of studies adopting PLS-SEM appears to be a timely and valuable endeavor. This paper offers a critical review of 139 articles that applied PLS-SEM from 2002 to 2019. Results show that the misuse of PLS-SEM can be avoided. Critical issues related to the application of PLS-SEM, research design, model development, and model evaluation are discussed in detail. This paper is the first to highlight the use and misuse of PLS-SEM in the construction management area and provides recommendations to facilitate the future application of PLS-SEM in this field.

How do project-oriented organizations enhance innovation? An institutional theory perspective

摘要: A project-oriented organization is a hybrid form of organization where a functional hierarchy is augmented with structures to manage projects strategically across the organization. Six project-oriented organizations from diverse industries that emphasize innovation in their strategies were selected for this study. We use the three pillars of institutional theory — regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive — and institutional entrepreneurship to analyze interview data from executive and project, program and portfolio management personnel in the project-oriented organizations to investigate how innovation is facilitated through external influences and internal responses. Our findings indicate that processes and new structures provide effective ways for innovation and, while individuals are important, processes are more effective than individuals at enabling innovation. We put forward some lessons for practice that emerge directly from the findings, including suggestions on improving allocation of resources, a need to focus on processes, reconceptualization of “failure”, and dedicated investment in market knowledge, customer knowledge, performance metrics and flexible governance structures.

Do civil engineering fronts emerge from interdisciplinary research?

摘要: Interdisciplinary research is considered a source of innovativeness and creativity, serving as a key mechanism for creating recombination necessary for the evolution of science systems. The aim of this study is to quantitatively establish the connection between interdisciplinary research and the research fronts that have recently emerged in civil engineering. The degree of interdisciplinarity of the research fronts was measured by developing metrics from bibliographic analyses. As indicated by the consistent increase in the metrics of interdisciplinarity over time, research fronts tend to emerge in studies with increasing diversity in the disciplines involved. The active disciplines involved in the fronts vary over time. The most active disciplines are no longer fundamental but those associated with energy, environment, and sustainable development, focusing on solutions to climate change and integrating intelligence technologies.

A better way to do small-for-size liver transplantation in rats

摘要:

Establishing a model for small-for-size liver transplantation is the basis for this study of partial and living donor graft liver transplantation. This study aims to explore a simpler and more effective way of establishing a 30% small-for-size liver transplantation in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were selected as the donors and recipients. Small-for-size orthotopic liver transplantation was performed using Kamada’s two-cuff method. The donor’s liver was flushed via the abdominal aorta and hepatectomy was performed in situ. The animals were divided into three groups depending on the graft selected, with 40 pairs of rats in each group. In group I, the median lobe of the liver was used as graft; in group II, the right half of the median lobe and the right lobe were used as graft; and in group III, the median and right lobes were used as graft. In groups I and II, the bodyweights of donors were the same as those of recipients; however, in group III the bodyweights of donors were 100–120 g less than those of the recipients. The duration needed for transplantation, the 7-day survival rates, and the technical complication rates were compared among these three groups. The time required for hepatectomy was shorter in group III compared with groups I and II (8.8?±?0.7 min vs. 11.5?±?1.1 min and 10.1?±?1.0 min, P = 0.001). The cold ischemia time for the grafts, the anhepatic times, and the transplantation times for the recipients were not significantly different among the three groups. Compared with groups I and II, the incidence of bleeding, bile leakage, and inferior vena caval strictures were significantly decreased in group III (P<0.05). No significant differences between the three groups were found based on other complications after the operation (P>0.05). Group III had better 7-day survival rates and longer median survival times but the differences were not statistically significant. The method of small for donor bodyweight using the median and right lobes for grafting may be a more effective and simpler way of establishing a 30% small-for-size liver transplantation in rats, as shown by the shorter hepatectomy time and the occurrence of fewer complications after the operation.

However, some experts have questioned this concept. This article does not oppose precision medicine. However, the incentive of vigorously promoting precision medicine at present is a concern.

How do digital technologies improve supply chain resilience in the COVID-19 pandemic?

摘要: Digital technologies (DTs) can assist businesses in coping with supply chain (SC) disruptions caused by unpredictability, such as pandemics. However, the current knowledge of the relationship between DTs and supply chain resilience (SCR) is insufficient. This study draws on information processing theory to develop a serial mediation model to address this deficiency. We analyze a sample set consisting of 264 Chinese manufacturers. The empirical results reveal that digital supply chain platforms (DSCPs), as well as supply chain traceability (SCT) and supply chain agility (SCA), fully mediate the favorable association between DTs and SCR. Specifically, the four significant indirect paths indicated that firms can improve SCR only if they use DTs to directly or indirectly improve SCT and SCA (through DSCPs). Our study contributes to the literature on resilience by examining the possible mechanism of mediation through which DTs influence SCR. The findings also offer essential insights for firms to modify their digital strategies and thrive in a turbulent environment.

Optimal Su-Do-Ku based interconnection scheme for increased power output from PV array under partial

摘要: Partial shading is a common phenomenon in PV arrays. They drastically reduce the power output because of mismatch losses, which are reliant on the shape of the shade as well as the locations of shaded panels in the array. The power output can be improved by distributing the shade over various rows to maximize the current entering the node. A Su-Do-Ku configuration can be used to rearrange the physical locations of the PV modules in a total cross tied PV array with the electrical connections left unchanged. However, this arrangement increases the length of the wire required to interconnect the panels thus increasing the line losses. In this paper, an improved Su-Do-Ku arrangement that reduces the length of the wire required for the connection is proposed. The system is designed and simulated in a Matlab/Simulink environment for various shading patterns and the efficacies of various arrangements are compared. The results prove that the power output is higher in the proposed improved Su-Do-Ku reconfiguration technique compared to the earlier proposed Su-Do-Ku technique.

摘要: Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is a novel minimally invasive surgical technique that is gaining popularity around the world. One of the most commonly performed procedures is single incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC). Most reported techniques utilize special purpose-made access port and articulating instruments, rendering the procedure costly and difficult to learn. This article provides a stepwise description of SILC technique using all straight instruments without the need for a special port. It aims to shorten the learning curve for surgeons wishing to adopt a safe and cost-effective SILC technique to their practice.

Research on polyhydroxyalkanoates and glycogen transformations: Key aspects to biologic nitrogen and phosphorus removal in low dissolved oxygen systems

摘要: In this paper, a study was conducted on the effect of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and glycogen transformations on biologic nitrogen and phosphorus removal in low dissolved oxygen (DO) systems. Two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR1 and SBR2) were operating with anaerobic/aerobic (low DO, 0.15–0.45 mg·L ) configurations, which cultured a propionic to acetic acid ratio (molar carbon ratio) of 1.0 and 2.0, respectively. Fewer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), total PHA, and glycogen transformations were observed with the increase of propionic/acetic acid, along with more poly-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHV) and poly-3-hydroxy-2-methyvalerate (PH2MV) shifts. The total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was 68% and 82% in SBR1 and SBR2, respectively. In the two SBRs, the soluble ortho-phosphate (SOP) removal efficiency was 94% and 99%, and the average sludge polyphosphate (poly-P) content (g·g-MLVSS ) was 8.3% and 10.2%, respectively. Thus, the propionic to acetic acid ratio of the influent greatly influenced the PHA form and quantity, glycogen transformation, and poly-P contained in activated sludge and further determined TN and SOP removal efficiency. Moreover, significant correlations between the SOP removal rate and the (PHV+ PH2MV)/PHA ratio were observed ( >0.99). Accordingly, PHA and glycogen transformations should be taken into account as key components for optimizing anaerobic/aerobic (low DO) biologic nitrogen and phosphorus removal systems.

On-line controlling system for nitrogen and phosphorus removal of municipal wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR)

摘要: The objectives of this study were to establish an on-line controlling system for nitrogen and phosphorus removal synchronously of municipal wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR for municipal wastewater treatment was operated in sequences: filling, anaerobic, oxic, anoxic, oxic, settling and discharge. The reactor was equipped with on-line monitoring sensors for dissolved oxygen (DO), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and pH. The variation of DO, ORP and pH is relevant to each phase of biological process for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in this SBR. The characteristic points of DO, ORP and pH can be used to judge and control the stages of process that include: phosphate release by the turning points of ORP and pH; nitrification by the ammonia valley of pH and ammonia elbows of DO and ORP; denitrification by the nitrate knee of ORP and nitrate apex of pH; phosphate uptake by the turning point of pH; and residual organic carbon oxidation by the carbon elbows of DO and ORP. The controlling system can operate automatically for nitrogen and phosphorus efficiently removal.

就像简单地用办公打印机在纸上打印图片一样直接写出 电子产品是电子产品行业长久以来的梦想。笔者实验室已发明和论证了首台液态金属打印机的原型,为该目标的实现迈出了关键的一步。作为在不久的将来为社会制造非常实用的桌面液态金属打印机的持续努力的一部分,本项工作旨在将此技术向消费者层面推进。通过一系列针对关键技术问题的工业设计和技术优化,如工作可靠性、打印分辨率、自动控制、人机界面设计、软件、硬件和软硬件之间的整合,可制造出一台高品质的个人桌面液态金属打印机(为进行大批量工业化生产做准备)。本文解释了此打印机的基本特点和重要技术原理,并论证了为制造功能性装置(如发光二极管(LED) 显示器)的几种可能的 消费者终端用途。此液态金属打印机是一种自动的个人电子产 品生产工具,其使用简单,成本低,并具有许多潜在用途。本文论证了这种新设备对一些新兴需求可能发挥的重要作用,概述了这项尖端技术的远景,并与几种传统打印方法进行了对比分析。可以预见,在不久的将来,这种桌面液态金属打印机将在学术领域、工业、教育和个人用户中成为基本的电子产品生 产工具,并会被用于许多新兴实践中。
