Pulse control of frequency and width for a real-time independently adjustable laser source Research Articles

Zhiwei Yang, Xu Wu, Deqin Ouyang, Encheng Zhang, Huibin Sun, Shuangchen Ruan,wuxu@sztu.edu.cn,scruan@szu.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 10,   Pages 1379-1389 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000294

Abstract: A set of semiconductor laser pulse seed sources based on an embedded chip is proposed. The greatest feature is that the optical pulse frequency and width can be independently adjusted in real time. The pulse seed sources can be switched independently and online from the gain-switched mode to the quasi-continuous wave mode to obtain optimal optical parameters for specific applications. To explore the physical mechanism of the semiconductor laser source, the rate equation that describes the carrier-photon transient change in a semiconductor laser cavity is numerically derived and solved. Subsequently, problems that need to be considered while designing the drive circuit are identified. The system evaluation indicates that the optical pulse frequency adjustment range is 250 Hz to 42 MHz, and the narrowest optical pulse output width is 80 ps. The pulse seed source can drive semiconductor lasers with different central wavelengths (1064, 1550, and 1970 nm), and can also simultaneously drive two semiconductor lasers and output dual-band optical pulses. It can be used as a seed source for general high-power optical systems, and exhibits good application value and extensive market prospects.

Kai Cai,kai.cai@eng.osaka-cu.ac.jp

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 5,   Pages 649-808 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000156

Abstract: In this paper we provide a tutorial on the background of using and survey relevant work in the literature. We present a new cyber-physical control method that achieves safe, deadlock-free, efficient, and adaptive behavior of multiple robots serving the goods-to-man logistic operations. A central piece of this method is the incremental supervisory control design algorithm, which is computationally scalable with respect to the number of robots. Finally, we provide a case study on 30 robots with changing conditions to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Scavenging Microwave Wireless Power: A Unified Model, Rectenna Design Automation, and Cutting-Edge Techniques Review

Si-Ping Gao, Jun-Hui Ou, Xiuyin Zhang, Yongxin Guo

Engineering 2023, Volume 30, Issue 11,   Pages 32-48 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.05.019

Abstract:

While sufficient review articles exist on inductive short-range wireless power transfer (WPT), long-haul microwave WPT (MWPT) for solar power satellites, and ambient microwave wireless energy harvesting (MWEH) in urban areas, few studies focus on the fundamental modeling and related design automation of receiver systems. This article reviews the development of MWPT and MWEH receivers, with a focus on rectenna design automation. A novel rectifier model capable of accurately modeling the rectification process under both high and low input power is presented. The model reveals the theoretical boundary of radio frequency-to-direct current (dc) power conversion efficiency and, most importantly, enables an automated system design. The automated rectenna design flow is sequential, with the minimal engagement of iterative optimization. It covers the design automation of every module (i.e., rectifiers, matching circuits,   antennae, and dc–dc converters). Scaling-up of the technique to large rectenna arrays is also possible, where the challenges in array partitioning and power combining are briefly discussed. In addition, several cutting-edge rectenna techniques for MWPT and MWEH are reviewed, including the dynamic range extension technique, the harmonics-based retro-directive technique, and the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer technique, which can be good complements to the presented automated design methodology.

Digital Water Developments and Lessons Learned from Automation in the Car and Aircraft Industries Review

Dragan Savić

Engineering 2022, Volume 9, Issue 2,   Pages 35-41 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.05.013

Abstract:

The provision of water and sanitation services is a key challenge worldwide. The size, complexity, and critical nature of the water and wastewater infrastructure providing such services make the planning and management of these systems extremely difficult. Following the digital revolution in many areas of our lives, the water sector has begun to benefit from digital transformation. Effective utilization of remotely sensed weather and soil moisture data for more efficient irrigation (i.e., for food production), better detection of anomalies and faults in pipe networks using artificial intelligence, the use of nature-inspired optimization to improve the management and planning of systems, and greater use of digital twins and robotics all exhibit great potential to change and improve the ways in which complex water systems are managed. However, there are additional risks associated with these developments, including—but not limited to—cybersecurity, incorrect use, and overconfidence in the capability and accuracy of digital solutions and automation. This paper identifies key advances in digital technology that have found application in the water sector, and applies forensic engineering principles to failures that have been experienced in industries further ahead with automation and digital transformation. By identifying what went wrong with new digital technologies that might have contributed to high-profile accidents in the car and aircraft industries (e.g., Tesla self-driving cars and the Boeing 737 Max), it is possible to identify similar risks in the water sector, learn from them, and prevent future failures. The key findings show that: ① Automation will require “humans in the loop”; ② human operators must be fully aware of the technology and trained to use it; ③ fallback manual intervention should be available in case of technology malfunctioning; ④ while redundant sensors may be costly, they reduce the risks due to erroneous sensor readings; ⑤ cybersecurity risks must be considered; and ⑥ ethics issues have to be considered, given the increasing automation and interconnectedness of water systems. These findings also point to major research areas related to digital transformation in the water sector.

Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 5,   Pages 240-253 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.01.011

Abstract:

Inspired by state-of-the-art material science, computer techniques, artificial intelligence, and automatic control, new-generation transportation infrastructures are becoming digitalized and intelligent. Many major developed countries around the globe are actively promoting the application of innovative intelligence-based technologies in transportation infrastructures in accordance with local conditions. This review begins with a brief discussion on the basic definition, scientific foundation, and development process for the intellectualization of transportation infrastructures. Then, following the whole life-cycle chain of design, construction, operational maintenance, and elimination, the current research status and major challenges presented by intellectualization technologies are systematically investigated. Subsequently, recent achievements in intellectual technologies are comprehensively presented by selecting the Beijing–Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway—the world's first railway built based on the concept of intelligent construction—as an example. Finally, a discussion on the future development of the intellectualization of transportation infrastructures is provided from the three dimensions of standard systems, theoretical methods, and talent training.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 8,   Pages 1142-1157 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100418

Abstract: In this paper, we aim to illustrate the concept of mutually trustworthy (HM-KA) as the technical mechanism of hybrid augmented intelligence (HAI) based complex system cognition, management, and control (CMC). We describe the historical development of complex system science and analyze the limitations of human intelligence and machine intelligence. The need for using human-machine HAI in is then explained in detail. The concept of “mutually trustworthy HM-KA” mechanism is proposed to tackle the CMC challenge, and its technical procedure and pathway are demonstrated using an example of corrective control in . It is expected that the proposed mutually trustworthy HM-KA concept can provide a novel and canonical mechanism and benefit real-world practices of complex system CMC.
