Genetics of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in Chinese population

Wei-Li ZHANG MD, PhD, Ru-Tai HUI MD, PhD,

Frontiers of Medicine 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 21-28 doi: 10.1007/s11684-010-0013-x

Abstract: Stroke is a major cause of adult death and disability worldwide. Epidemiological and animal studies have provided strong evidence that the pathogenesis of stroke is multi-factorial and induced by a combination of environmental and genetic risk factors, but the identification of individual causative variants remains little known. Genetic influences are likely to be polygenic with small effect sizes, and stroke itself consists of a number of different subtypes which may each have different genetic profiles. In addition, various ethnic populations may have different stroke risk, such as Asian race. The reasons for high risk of stroke among the Chinese, especially hemorrhagic stroke, remain unknown. Most human studies have taken a candidate gene approach using case-control methodology. To be reliably detected, small relative risks require large sample sizes, probably 1000 patients or more. Genome-wide association (GWA) study is an unbiased and comprehensive approach to identify common risk alleles for complex diseases. Recently, a multistage GWA study has identified three loci on chromosomes 2q, 8q and 9p to be associated with intracranial aneurysm in European and Japanese populations. Another GWA finding is the identification of risk variants for cardioembolic stroke on chromosome 4q25 in European populations. In this review, we mainly focus on the results from case-control association studies on genetic factors that play a role in the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in Chinese population. The combined effects of multiple susceptibility genes for stroke risk are also summarized.

Industrial solid waste flow analysis of eco-industrial parks: implications for sustainable waste management in China

Yongpeng Lü, Kai YANG, Yue CHE, Zhaoyi SHANG, Jun TAI, Yun JIAN

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2012, Volume 6, Issue 4,   Pages 575-587 doi: 10.1007/s11783-011-0344-0

Abstract: Sustainable waste management in the industrial ecology perspective brings enormous challenges to the existing methodology of waste analysis at the industrial park (IP) scale. In this study, a four-step method was proposed for industrial solid waste (ISW) flow analysis of eco-industrial parks (EIPs) and applied to two IPs in eastern China. According to a park-wide census of 619 industrial enterprises and 105 questionnaires by a survey from 2006 to 2008, the results indicated that: 1) at the enterprise scale, more than 60% of enterprises were small-ISW-generation enterprises which encountered great difficulties on effective waste management; 2) at the IP scale, though the two IPs have set up their own environmental management systems and passed the ISO 14001 certification, the efficiencies of the ISW management systems have yet to be improved in the industrial ecology perspective; and 3) at the regional scale, more than 97% of ISW flowed within the provincial region, indicating that the provincial governments prevented the wastes from flowing into their own “back yard”. Effective waste management should be placed in a broader perspective. Approaches to sustainable waste management may include wastes exchange, efficient waste and information flow, virtual EIP, waste minimization clubs and regionalization of waste management.

The Mode of Net-virus Actions

Shan Xiuming,Li Tai,Jiaojian,Ren Yong,Qiu Gui,Cao Yiqun

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 12,   Pages 55-59

Abstract:

The computer network is not only of benefit to the people, but also helpful for the spreading of viruses. The net-viruses spread more widely and rapidly than the traditional viruses, and network has become the major way of the virus spreading. This article analyzes the mode of the net-virus spreading, including E-mail spreading, positive scanning spreading and through-server spreading. Then some defense strategies in the antivirus field are introduced, and some countermeasures of the net computer users are discussed.

Research of Gas Qualitative Analysis Using Self-organizing Competitive Network

Tai Huiling,Xie Guangzhong,Jiang Yadong

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 81-84

Abstract:

The semiconductor gas sensors sensitive to hydrogen and carbon monoxide are chosen to compose the gas sensor array, and an on-line data acquisition system is constructed, which is combined with the pattern recognition techniques of self organizing competitive network for the research of gas qualitative analysis. In order to eliminate the effect produced by the gas concentration, three kinds of normalization methods are developed to pre-process the sensors responses toward hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The research results show that the accurate identification of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the finite range could be accomplished by relative method.

Reactive oxygen species generation is essential for cisplatin-induced accelerated senescence in hepatocellular carcinoma

Frontiers of Medicine 2014, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 227-235 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0327-1

Abstract:

Accelerated senescence is important because this process is involved in tumor suppression and has been induced by many chemotherapeutic agents. The platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin displays a wide range of antitumor activities. However, the molecular mechanism of cisplatin-induced accelerated senescence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. In the present study, the growth inhibitory effect of cisplatin on HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cells was detected by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Cellular senescence was then assessed by β-galactosidase assay. Senescence-related factors, including p53, p21, and p16, were evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was analyzed by flow cytometry. Our results revealed that cisplatin reduced the proliferation of HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Senescent phenotype observed in cisplatin-treated hepatoma cells was dependent on p53 and p21 activation but not on p16 activation. Furthermore, cisplatin-induced accelerated senescence depended on intracellular ROS generation. The ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine also significantly suppressed the cisplatin-induced senescence of HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cells. In conclusion, our results revealed a functional link between intracellular ROS generation and cisplatin-induced accelerated senescence, and this link may be used as a potential target of HCC.

Research on the Quasi-static and Dynamic Properties and Constitutive Relation of Carbon Fiber-reinforced Phenolic Composite

Zhang Tai,Wang Xiaojun,Wang Zhihai,Guo Yang,Wang Yuanbo

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 5,   Pages 63-68

Abstract:

The quasi-static and dynamic compression properties of carbon fiber-reinforced phenolic composite are investigated by a series of MTS and SHPB tests. The results show that the material is rate-dependent and temperature-dependent. A new nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model is proposed and the coefficients in the constitutive equation are obtained by the experiment stress-strain curves. The influence of temperature on the constitutive equation is remarkable, and its effects can be described by the material parameters related to temperature. Based on the consideration that the responses of the material to reducing strain rate and raising temperature are similar, the time-temperature equivalent law is investigaled and the corresponding equivalent curve under different loading conditions is approached.
