Experimental study on the temperature dependence of ultraviolet absorption cross-sections of sulfur dioxide

ZHANG Shiliang, ZHOU Jie, CHEN Xiaohu

Frontiers in Energy 2008, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 183-186 doi: 10.1007/s11708-008-0025-2

Abstract: The photoabsorption cross-sections of sulfur dioxide were measured in the spectral regions of 200–230 nm and 275–315 nm at 298–415 K, using a grating monochromator with a resolution of 0.2 nm. The discrete absorption cross-section is directly correlated with the number of quantum excited from the base state. The absorption cross-sections at the peaks of discrete bands decreased linearly with the increase of temperature, which corresponded to the decrease in the population of vibrational and rotational transitions from the base level to higher excitation levels. The absorption cross-section peaks decreased linearly when the temperature increased from 298 to 415 K, with relative drops of 74.0% and 75.8% at 200–230 nm and 275–315 nm, respectively. Another distinctive feature of sulfur dioxide absorption spectra in the above two spectral regions was the quasiperiodic structure of the absorption peaks, whose equal wavelength intervals were 1.53 nm and 1.95 nm, respectively. Red and blue shifts were not found at the absorption peak positions.

Dynamic characteristics of a magnetorheological pin joint for civil structures

Yancheng LI,Jianchun LI

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2014, Volume 9, Issue 1,   Pages 15-33 doi: 10.1007/s11465-014-0283-0

Abstract:

Magnetorheological (MR) pin joint is a novel device in which its joint moment resistance can be controlled in real-time by altering the applied magnetic field. The smart pin joint is intended to be used as a controllable connector between the columns and beams of a civil structure to instantaneously shift the structural natural frequencies in order to avoid resonance and therefore to reduce unwanted vibrations and hence prevent structural damage. As an intrinsically nonlinear device, modelling of this MR fluid based device is a challenging task and makes the design of a suitable control algorithm a cumbersome situation. Aimed at its application in civil structure, the main purpose of this paper is to test and characterise the hysteretic behaviour of MR pin joint. A test scheme is designed to obtain the dynamic performance of MR pin joint in the dominant earthquake frequency range. Some unique phenomena different from those of MR damper are observed through the experimental testing. A computationally-efficient model is proposed by introducing a hyperbolic element to accurately reproduce its dynamic behaviour and to further facilitate the design of a suitable control algorithm. Comprehensive investigations on the model accuracy and dependences of the proposed model on loading condition (frequency and amplitude) and input current level are reported in the last section of this paper.

Dependence of error sensitivity of frequency on bias voltage in force-balanced micro accelerometer

Lili CHEN, Wu ZHOU

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 146-149 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0260-z

Abstract:

To predict more precisely the frequency of force-balanced micro accelerometer with different bias voltages, the effects of bias voltages on error sensitivity of frequency is studied. The resonance frequency of accelerometer under closed loop control is derived according to its operation principle, and its error sensitivity is derived and analyzed under over etching structure according to the characteristics of Deep Reaction Ion Etching (DRIE). Based on the theoretical results, micro accelerometer is fabricated and tested to study the influences of AC bias voltage and DC bias voltage on sensitivity, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the relative errors between test data and theory data are less than 7%, and the fluctuating value of error sensitivity under the range of voltage adjustment is less than 0.01 μm . It is concluded that the error sensitivity with designed parameters of structure, circuit and process error can be used to predict the frequency of accelerometer with no need to consider the influence of bias voltage.

Long-term behavior and safety assessment of Sance Rockfill Dam

Marta DOLEZALOVA, Ivo HLADIK

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 79-89 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0010-9

Abstract: Safety assessment of the 62 m high Sance Rockfill Dam based on long-term monitoring results and their simulation by numerical models is presented in the paper. Unexpectedly large settlements and horizontal movements of the crest together with the steep downstream slope questioned the safety of the dam. Calibrated 2D and 3D models fitting the monitoring results were applied for the safety assessment of the dam including slope stability analysis and estimation of the clay core cracking and hydraulic fracturing hazard. The modeling results contributed to the rehabilitation concept and project of the dam.

Acupuncture-related techniques for the treatment of opiate addiction: a case of translational medicine

Jisheng Han, Cailian Cui, Liuzhen Wu

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 141-150 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0136-8

Abstract: Drug addiction is a chronic brain disorder characterized by withdrawal symptoms that occur during drug abstinence and a high tendency of relapse. Compared with the currently available pharmacological interventions, acupuncture therapy has the potential to help drug addicts stay away from drugs without major adverse side effects. It has taken decades of research to optimize the parameters of electrical acupoint stimulation for detoxification and for relapse prevention, as well as to establish a safe and easy procedure by which drug addicts can use it on themselves. The discovery that acupuncture can trigger the release of opioid substances from the brain in the 1970s provided the inspiration. Following this, basic research on animals made it possible to understand the mechanisms of action and establish the procedure for treating drug addictions. This article reviews the past, present, and foreseeable future regarding the use of acupuncture-related technique for the treatment of opiate addiction from the perspective of translational medicine.

Develop bio-fuel actively to minimize dependence on petroleum

Cao Xianghong

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 4-12

Abstract:

This paper makes an analysis of the rising trend of China's petroleum consumption, the oil supply potential of China and the entire world, as well as great pressure China is facing in emission reduction, putting forward an idea that development of bio-fuel is one of the important strategic measures in reducing the excessive reliance of economic development and social progress on petroleum and reducing CO2 emission. It then makes a brief discussion on the idea that developing bio-fuel and bio-based material is the best way to utilize the biomass, which is followed by a comprehensive narration of the status quo of bio-fuel development in China and the entire world and a presentation of countermeasures for developing bio-fuel industry in China.

Nonlinear Size-dependent Study of Ultra-thin Elastic Film With Surface Effect

Huang Dianwu,Li Yuanjun,Li Kai

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 54-59

Abstract:

A new nano-scale plate-like model in which the influence of surface effect and the geometrically nonlinear condition are considered is introduced on the basis of Mindlin theory. By using Hamilton's principle, the governing equations are derived. The residue membrane force and bending moment, which are caused by the surface stresses, are explicitly expatiated. After analyzing the membrane force and bending moment, it can be obtained that they are dependent on the deformation of the film and are accordant to classical plate theory. The model is then applied to analyze the bending and buckling of simply supported micro- and nano-films in plane strains . Differing from the conventional plate theory, the proposed model and solutions involve the intrinsic scale and depend on the thickness of the film. Thus, it can be found that when the thickness of,the film is equal to or less than the intrinsic scale, the surface effect is strongly sensitive to the thickness of the film.
