Study on Fire Risk Assessment on Steel Constructions of National Theater

Xu Liang,Zhang Heping,Zhu Wuba,Yang Yun

Strategic Study of CAE 2005, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 59-63

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to study how the high-temperature smoke would affect the steel constructions of the national theater. CFD method and empirical equations are employed to calculate the temperatures in the huge public hall interactively. A steel construction safe temperature of 250℃ is determined, and the calculated smoke temperatures are under the determined steel construction safe temperature, which proves the steel constructions of the national theater will pot be damaged by the smoke produced in fires.

Review and Prospect of the Development of Railway Steel Structure in China

Liu Xiaoguang, Lu Chunfang, Ju Xiaochen, Cai Chaoxun

Strategic Study of CAE 2020, Volume 22, Issue 3,   Pages 117-124 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2020.03.018

Abstract:

China has made great achievements in railway construction since its founding over 70 years ago. Particularly, China’s highspeed railway industry has developed rapidly and become a beautiful national business card over the past 15 years. Steel structures play an irreplaceable and critical role in railway development and are widely applied in long-span railway steel bridges and roof trusses of railway stations. This research reviews and prospects the development of railway steel structures. It reviews the development of railway steel structures from the perspective of material, structure, and project scale, and proposes the development trends of the railway steel structures, namely, lightweight, assembly, informatization, strong durability, and high tenacity. Moreover, the focuses of future development of the railway steel structures are summarized in terms of design, construction, maintenance, and material. The diversification of application areas and environments has posed a series of technical challenges for the railway steel structure development, including weather resistant design, construction in harsh marine environment, and lack of maintenance in plateau environment, which all require persistent and further research.

New progress in study of the technology of strengthening structures with prestressed fiber reinforced plastics

Lu Yiyan,Chen Juan,Huang Yinshen,Wu Tao

Strategic Study of CAE 2008, Volume 10, Issue 8,   Pages 40-44

Abstract:

The application of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) in strengthening projects is one of the most popular fields in the studies in civil engineering. Practices and theories have testified that the technology of strengthening structures with prestressed FRP is feasible with obvious advantages. A concise state-of-the-art survey and new progress of the technology of strengthening structures with prestressed FRP are presented, including studies in terms of concrete structures strengthening with prestressed FRP, steel structures strengthening with prestressed FRP and the key problems in its practical application. Experimental studies revealed that strengthened with prestressed FRP, the cracking load, yielding load and ultimate capacity of RC beams increased obviously, behaviors of flexure members under long-term load were improved, and the fatigue life of concrete members were also increased.Strengthen steel beams with prestressed FRP, the yielding load and ultimate capacity increased obviously, with greater increase when more CFRP were used or at higher prestress level. Prestressed CFRP contributed to the rigidity of steel beam especially when strength of steel is relatively low. The key problems in practical application of the technology of strengthening with prestressed FRP include the studies on prestress applying system, prestress control value, prestress loss and end anchorage system.

Design Method and Applcation of Steel Braced Frames

Guan Kejian,Wang Xinwu,Peng Shaomin

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 5,   Pages 80-83

Abstract:

In the paper, three types of steel braced frames are introduced. The features of concentrically steel braced frames, eccentrically braced frames and off-centrically braced frames and their application scope are concluded. Some calculating rules and design methods about concentrically steel braced frames and eccentrically braced frames are put forward.

Construction Technology of Shanghai Jinmao Building

Ye Keming,Fan Qingguo

Strategic Study of CAE 2000, Volume 2, Issue 10,   Pages 42-49

Abstract:

Shanghai Jinmao building is the 3rd highest building in the world at present. The main building consists of reinforced concrete core wall and exterior structure steel frame. It is rather difficult to construct this edifice in such a poor soil condition in Shanghai. Proceeding from actual facts, Shanghai Construction Groups (SCG) makes efforts to conduct technology innovation, and absorbs advanced experiences domestic and abroad wildly. A unit of unique construction technique and a suitable managing system were developed with the growth of this building. SCG successfully solved a series of construction difficulties including deep-foundation work, mega-columns construction, high - altitude construction and erection, and so on. It only spent 4 years on this building, which set a high-speed record in construction history.

Steel Design by Advanced Analysis: Material Modeling and Strain Limits Research Article

Leroy Gardner, Xiang Yun, Andreas Fieber, Lorenzo Macorini

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 243-249 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.11.026

Abstract:

Structural analysis of steel frames is typically performed using beam elements. Since these elements are unable to explicitly capture the local buckling behavior of steel cross-sections, traditional steel design specifications use the concept of cross-section classification to determine the extent to which the strength and deformation capacity of a cross-section are affected by local buckling. The use of plastic design methods are restricted to Class 1 cross-sections, which possess sufficient rotation capacity for plastic hinges to develop and a collapse mechanism to form. Local buckling prevents the development of plastic hinges with such rotation capacity for cross-sections of higher classes and, unless computationally demanding shell elements are used, elastic analysis is required. However, this article demonstrates that local buckling can be mimicked effectively in beam elements by incorporating the continuous strength method (CSM) strain limits into the analysis. Furthermore, by performing an advanced analysis that accounts for both geometric and material nonlinearities, no additional design checks are required. The positive influence of the strain hardening observed in stocky cross-sections can also be harnessed, provided a suitably accurate stress–strain relationship is adopted; a quad-linear material model for hot-rolled steels is described for this purpose. The CSM strain limits allow cross-sections of all slenderness to be analyzed in a consistent advanced analysis framework and to benefit from the appropriate level of load redistribution. The proposed approach is applied herein to individual members, continuous beams, and frames, and is shown to bring significant benefits in terms of accuracy and consistency over current steel design specifications.
