摘要: Abstract • Micro-plastics (MPs) significantly increase Pb toxicity. • Algae reduce the combined toxicity of MP and Pb. • The toxicity increase comes from high soluble Pb and MP-Pb uptake. • The toxicity reduction might come from energy related pathway. Microplastics (MPs) have been recognized as a new class of emerging contaminants in recent years. They not only directly impact aquatic organisms, but also indirectly impact these organisms by interacting with background toxins in the environment. Moreover, under realistic environmental conditions, algae, a natural food for aquatic organisms, may alter the toxicity pattern related to MPs. In this research, we first examined the toxicity of MPs alone, and their effect on the toxicity of lead (Pb) on Ceriodaphnia dubia (C. dubia), a model aquatic organism for toxicity survey. Then, we investigated the effect of algae on the combined toxicity of MPs and Pb. We observed that, MPs significantly increased Pb toxicity, which was related to the increase in soluble Pb concentration and the intake of Pb-loaded MPs, both of which increased the accumulation of Pb in C. dubia. The presence of algae mitigated the combined toxicity of MPs and Pb, although algae alone increased Pb accumulation. Therefore, the toxicity mitigation through algae uptake came from mechanisms other than Pb accumulation, which will need further investigation.

Optimization and modeling of coagulation-flocculation to remove algae and organic matter from surface

摘要: Charge neutralization and sweep flocculation were the major mechanisms. Effect of process parameters was investigated. Optimal coagulation conditions were studied by response surface methodology. ANN models presented more robust and accurate prediction than RSM. Seasonal algal blooms of Lake Yangcheng highlight the necessity to develop an effective and optimal water treatment process to enhance the removal of algae and dissolved organic matter (DOM). In the present study, the coagulation performance for the removal of algae, turbidity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) was investigated systematically by central composite design (CCD) using response surface methodology (RSM). The regression models were developed to illustrate the relationships between coagulation performance and experimental variables. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to test the significance of the response surface models. It can be concluded that the major mechanisms of coagulation to remove algae and DOM were charge neutralization and sweep flocculation at a pH range of 4.66–6.34. The optimal coagulation conditions with coagulant dosage of 7.57 mg Al/L, pH of 5.42 and initial algal cell density of 3.83 × 106 cell/mL led to removal of 96.76%, 97.64%, 40.23% and 30.12% in term of cell density, turbidity, DOC and UV254 absorbance, respectively, which were in good agreement with the validation experimental results. A comparison between the modeling results derived through both ANOVA and artificial neural networks (ANN) based on experimental data showed a high correlation coefficient, which indicated that the models were significant and fitted well with experimental results. The results proposed a valuable reference for the treatment of algae-laden surface water in practical application by the optimal coagulation-flocculation process.

Surface water treatment benefits from the presence of algae: Influence of algae on the coagulation behavior

摘要: Abstract • Emerging titanium coagulation was high-efficient for algae-laden water treatment. • Polytitanium coagulation was capable for both algae and organic matter removal. • Surface water purification was improved by around 30% due to algae inclusion. • Algae functioned as flocculant aid to assist polytitanium coagulation. • Algae could enhance charge neutralization capability of polytitanium coagulant. Titanium-based coagulation has proved to be effective for algae-laden micro-polluted water purification processes. However, the influence of algae inclusion in surface water treatment by titanium coagulation is barely reported. This study reports the influence of both Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis wesenbergii in surface water during polytitanium coagulation. Jar tests were performed to evaluate coagulation performance using both algae-free (controlled) and algae-laden water samples, and floc properties were studied using a laser diffraction particle size analyzer for online monitoring. Results show that polytitanium coagulation can be highly effective in algae separation, removing up to 98% from surface water. Additionally, the presence of algae enhanced organic matter removal by up to 30% compared to controlled water containing only organic matter. Polytitanium coagulation achieved significant removal of fluorescent organic materials and organic matter with a wide range of molecular weight distribution (693–4945 Da) even in the presence of algae species in surface water. The presence of algae cells and/or algal organic matter is likely to function as an additional coagulant or flocculation aid, assisting polytitanium coagulation through adsorption and bridging effects. Although the dominant coagulation mechanisms with polytitanium coagulant were influenced by the coagulant dosage and initial solution pH, algae species in surface water could enhance the charge neutralization capability of the polytitanium coagulant. Algae-rich flocs were also more prone to breakage with strength factors approximately 10% lower than those of algae-free flocs. Loose structure of the flocs will require careful handling of the flocs during coagulation-sedimentation-filtration processes.

Freshwater algae chemotaxonomy by high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis

摘要: The study of community composition of algae is essential for understanding the structure and dynamics of the aquatic ecosystem and for evaluating the eutrophic level of the water body. A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method based on a reverse-phase C nonpolar column was developed for the main algal taxa, which includes cyanophytes, bacillariophytes, euglenophytes, dinophytes, and chlorophytes. Based on the elution order using HPLC, 19 pigments were identified, and they were chlorophyllide , 19′-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, chlorophyll + , phephorbides , peridinin, methyl-chlorophyllide , fucoxanthin, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, myxoxanthophyll, diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, chlorophyll allomer, chlorophyll , chlorophyll allomer, chlorophyll , and β,β-carotene. A comparison study of cell microscopic counts and accessory pigment analysis indicated that HPLC analysis could be a useful tool for monitoring phytoplankton communities and their abundance.

Temporal changes in the characteristics of algae in Dianchi Lake, Yunnan Province, China

摘要: Algal blooms have become a worldwide environmental concern due to water eutrophication. Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province, China is suffering from severe eutrophication and is listed in the Three Important Lakes Restoration Act of China. Hydrothermal liquefaction allows a promising and direct conversion of algal biomass into biocrude oil. In this study, algal samples were collected from Dianchi Lake after a separation procedure including dissolved air flotation with polyaluminum chloride and centrifugation during four months, April, June, August and October. The algal biochemical components varied over the period; lipids from 0.7% to 2.1% ash-free dry weight (afdw), protein from 20.9% to 33.4% afdw and ash from 36.6% to 45.2% dry weight. The algae in June had the highest lipid and protein concentrations, leading to a maximum biocrude oil yield of 24.3% afdw. Biodiversity analysis using pyrosequencing revealed different distributions of microbial communities, specifically in April (89.0%), June (63.7%) and August (84.0%), and in April (2.2%), June (12.0%) and August (1.0%). This study demonstrated remarkable temporal changes in the biochemical composition and biodiversity of algae harvested from Dianchi Lake and changes in biocrude oil production potential.

Brown marine algae turbinaria conoides as biosorbent for Malachite green removal: Equilibrium and kinetic

摘要: In this study, the biosorption of Malachite green (MG) onto Turbinaria conoides, brown marine algae, was studied with respect to initial pH, temperature, initial dye concentration, and sorbent dosage. The optimum initial pH and temperature values for MG removal were found to be 8.0 and 30°C, respectively. Sorbent dosage was found to strongly influence the removal of MG. Equilibrium studies were carried out to test the validity of the Langmuir ( = 66.6 mg/g and = 0.526 mL mol/L) and the Freundlich ( = 1.826 and = 3.751 mg/g) isotherms. The kinetic studies indicated the validity of the pseudo first-order and second-order equation.

Selection and characterization of eight freshwater green algae strains for synchronous water purification

摘要: The objective of this study is to select and characterize the candidate for synchronous water purification and lipid production from eight freshwater microalgae strains ( sp. HQ, , , , , , , sp. LX1). The strains sp. HQ, . , and . showed superiority in biomass accumulation, while the top biomass producers did not correspond to the top lipid producers. achieved higher lipid content (66.1%), and sp. HQ and ranked down in sequence, with lipid content above 30%. Considering nutrient removal ability (total nitrogen (TN): 52.97%; total phosphorus (TP): 84.81%), the newly isolated microalga sp. HQ was the possible candidate for water purification coupled with lipid production. To further investigate the lipid producing and nutrient removal mechanism of candidate microalga, the ultra structural changes especially the lipid droplets under different water qualities (different TN and TP concentrations) were characterized. The results elucidate the nutrient-deficiency (TN: 3.0 mg·L ; TP: 0.3 mg·L ) condition was in favor of forming lipid bodies in sp. HQ at the sub-cellular level, while the biomass production was inhibited due to the decrease in chloroplast number which could further suppress the nutrient removal effect. Finally, a two-phase cultivation process (a nutrient replete phase to produce biomass followed by a nutrient deplete phase to enhance lipid content) was conducted in a photo-bioreactor for sp. HQ to serve for algae-based synchronous biodiesel production and wastewater purification.

摘要: Renewable algae biomass, was used as substrate for generating electricity in two chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs). From polarization test, maximum power density with pretreated algal biomass was 102 mW·m (951 mW·m ) at current generation of 276 mA·m . The individual electrode potential as a function of current generation suggested that anodic oxidation process of algae substrate had limitation for high current generation in MFC. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) reduction of 74% was obtained when initial TCOD concentration was 534 mg·L for 150 h of operation. The main organic compounds of algae oriented biomass were lactate and acetate, which were mainly used for electricity generation. Other by-products such as propionate and butyrate were formed at a negligible amount. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis pinpointed the charge transfer resistance (112 ?) of anode electrode, and the exchange current density of anode electrode was 1214 nA·cm .

回顾分析了国外微藻生物柴油、秸秆乙醇汽油、新一代生物质汽油的新进展和工业化过程面临的挑战及对策。并建议要根据我国生物质原料供应、科研基础,开展国际合作,力争在2015年建成微藻生物柴油、秸秆乙醇汽油、生物质汽油工业示范装置,为以后的大发展奠定基础。

辽河流域河流健康综合评价方法研究

摘要:

根据2009年5月太子河流域水生生物(藻类、鱼类和大型底栖动物)调查结果,以藻类、鱼类、大型底栖动物、基本水质和营养盐作为候选参数,采用总体线性回归模型和相关性分析法对它们进行筛选,构建了多指标河流健康综合评价指数,对辽河流域河流健康进行了评估。结果表明,辽河流域河流健康受损较重,未达到“良”等级的样点有146个,所占比例高达83 %,主要分布在浑河、东辽河和西辽河流域,这些流域受到来自城市、工业及农业面源污染较大;“良”等级的样点只有30个,主要分布在太子河流域上游地区,这些样点受到人类干扰较少;整个流域鱼类类群存在显著退化趋势,其中西辽河的鱼类类群衰退现象最明显。

Factors influencing water quality indices in a typical urban river originated with reclaimed water

摘要: The water quality in a typical urban river segment originated with reclaimed water in Beijing was monitored for two years to investigate the evolution of water quality along the river, and statistical analysis was applied to determine factors influencing water quality of such river recharged by reclaimed water. It was found that no significant change in pollutant concentrations (including COD, NH -N, TN and TP) was observed during this time, and their average values were close to those of the original reclaimed water. However, turbidity and algal contents fluctuated temporally in the direction of river flow. Statistical analysis showed that turbidity was strongly positively correlated with algal contents for flow rate<0.1 m·s , whereas it was strongly positively correlated with both algal contents and TOC for flow rate>0.1 m·s . It was observed that diatom was the absolute predominant phyla with as the major species. In terms of algal bloom control, the specific growth rate of algae was strongly correlated to temperature, and was influenced by flow rate as well. Compared with two other rivers originated with reclaimed water and one originated with natural water, the Shannon–Wiener index in the objective river was the lowest, with values between 0.7 and 1.6, indicating a high risk for algal bloom. Statistics showed that Shannon–Wiener index was strongly negatively correlated to nutrient salts and cations.

化学强化反冲洗缓解超滤处理含藻地表水的膜污染机制及调控——从小试到生产示范研究 Article

超滤(UF)工艺已广泛应用于饮用水处理中。然而,藻类及其分泌物会导致严重的膜污染,在实际生产过程中对超滤工艺构成巨大挑战。本文开发了一种简单实用的化学强化反冲洗(CEB)技术,考察了次氯酸钠(NaClO)、氯化钠(NaCl)、氢氧化钠(NaOH)、柠檬酸钠及其组合对藻源膜污染的控制效能。结果表明,化学清洗剂的类型是影响超滤膜水力不可逆膜污染(HIMF)的关键因素。其中,NaClO 对HIMF的控制效果最佳,其次是NaCl。此外,与单独使用NaClO相比,将NaClO与NaCl、NaOH或柠檬酸钠等组合使用对HIMF的控制效果并没有明显提升。NaClO 的最优投加量和投加方案为10 mg∙L−1,且最佳投加频次为每天两次。通过开展长周期的中试和生产实验进一步表明CEB技术可有效缓解藻源膜污染,尤其是HIMF。此外,与不添加化学药剂的常规水力反冲洗相比,CEB技术主要是通过氧化作用有效地去除包括生物聚合物、腐殖质和蛋白质类物质等在内的有机污染物,削弱有机污染物与膜表面之间的黏附力,从而显著降低HIMF。因此,CEB技术可在低药剂条件下有效地缓解藻源膜污染,是一种有效阻控超滤处理含藻地表水过程膜污染的方法。
