HARNESSING BIODIVERSITY FOR HEALTHY DAIRY FARMS

摘要:

Producing sufficient high-quality forage to meet the increasing domestic demand for safe and nutritious milk products is one of the critical challenges that Chinese dairy farms are facing. The increased forage biomass production, mainly contributed by agrochemicals inputs in China, is accompanied by tremendous impacts on the ecology of dairy farms and soil quality. This paper presents a framework for healthy dairy farms in which targeted management practices are applied for quality milk products with minimal adverse environmental impacts. The paper also summarizes biodiversity management practices at the field and landscape scales toward lessening inputs of water, fertilizers, pesticides and mitigating soil compaction. Dairy farming with biodiversity-driven technologies and solutions will be more productive in producing quality milk and minimizing environmental damage.

Impact of preozonation on the bioactivity and biodiversity of subsequent biofilters under low temperature

摘要: The bioactivity was enhanced by preozonation under low temperature conditions. Higher level of BDOC/AOC and DO may enhance the nitrifying performance. High level of biodiversity and bioactivity may help maintain the stability of filters. Water quality and DO could selectively enhance different microbial communities. The combination of preozonation and subsequent biological granular activated carbon (O /BAC) filtration is well known as a promising method for the removal of many pollutants. Temperature and nutrients are the dominant factors in external conditions to influence the biological communities. To explore the influence of preozonation under low temperature, the factors such as dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and NH -N were analyzed from the sampling ports every week; triphenyl tetrazolium chloride-dehydrogenase activity (TTC-DHA) and the nitrifying activity were detected along the bed height of biofilter at four levels (10, 40, 70 and 110 cm) on the 90th, 110th, and 130th day; microbial community, based on 16S rRNA gene-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), was monitored on the 130th day of the operation. The observed microbial property showed that preozonation had a positive influence on bioactivity, biomass and nitrifying activity. Community analysis showed no significant difference on the biodiversity of nitrifying bacteria between the parallel filters in the inlet end based on the method employed. This result showed that biofilters’ performance is not correlated well with microbial biodiversity. The elevated functionality in O /BAC filters can be a result of increased microbial activity, which was promoted by preozonation.

Grassland ecology in China: perspectives and challenges

摘要: During the last few decades, there have been an increasing number of studies on grassland ecology in China, involving the classic ecology concepts or theories and the applicable ecological principles of grassland conservation or management. This paper reviews the main progress in the following aspects. (1) Research on grassland species adaptation and resistance, population dynamics and foraging behavior, and biodiversity and community stability. (2) Research on managed grassland ecosystems (grassland grazing ecology) including grazing effects on grassland ecosystem function and foraging behavior by large herbivores. (3) Global climate change and grassland processes and functioning. (4) Applied research on grassland restoration and ecosystem health assessments such as vegetation restoration, restoration of ecosystem functioning, and assessment methods. There have been significant advances in grassland ecology, including the functions of ecosystem biodiversity, the ecological stoichiometry mechanisms affecting grassland community stability, grazing regulation of plant diversity and nutrient cycling. Grassland ecologists have succeeded in making these advances through observational, experimental and theoretical studies. Nevertheless, there are still significant challenges for the grassland ecology research, including understanding of grassland spatial processes, grassland grazing and multi-functionality, integrated effects of global climate change across grassland areas, as well as the ecological methodology and experimental techniques in grassland ecology.

从农场到微生物工程:微生态与过敏性疾病

第二次世界大战之后,IgE 依赖性过敏性疾病的发生呈稳步上升趋势,在人类发展史上,这种现象是很罕见的。许多大规模横断面研究、纵向队列研究及基础实验性研究均指出,在生活方式及生活环境的重大演变过程中人类的一些与过敏相关的“保护性因素”正逐渐消失。其中被广泛认可的观念是:肠道微生态在免疫调节方面扮演着重要角色。本文综述了暴露在不同微生物组成的农场环境对过敏性疾病的保护作用。此外,传统生活环境中的微生物如何促进儿童免疫系统的正常发育,以及此种相互作用在现代生活方式下的不可逆性缺失同样被阐明。“农场效应”的保护作用主要包括:母亲怀孕期间或婴儿期接触动物、谷仓、马厩,饮用未加工的牛奶和其他奶制品。除农场环境中的微生物总量之外,微生物的生物多样性似乎对于这种保护也至关重要,这可能归因于农场环境对机体肠道菌群生物多样性的贡献。过敏性疾病专科医生和儿科医生临床应用传统益生菌(如乳杆菌和双岐杆菌)对过敏性疾病的预防作用并未达到满意的预期效果。小鼠呼吸道过敏性疾病模型研究表明,牛棚中存在着对过敏性疾病起重要预防作用的微生物,如鲁氏不动杆菌(A.lwoffii) F78、乳酸乳球菌(L. lactis) G121 和松鼠葡萄球菌(S.sciuri)W620。然而,在对农场环境的卓有成效的研究基础上,研发新一代益生菌仍需要微生物学家、免疫学家和生物工程师以及儿科医生、过敏性疾病专科医生、临床试验专家和伦理委员会之间的密切合作。

Temporal changes in the characteristics of algae in Dianchi Lake, Yunnan Province, China

摘要: Algal blooms have become a worldwide environmental concern due to water eutrophication. Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province, China is suffering from severe eutrophication and is listed in the Three Important Lakes Restoration Act of China. Hydrothermal liquefaction allows a promising and direct conversion of algal biomass into biocrude oil. In this study, algal samples were collected from Dianchi Lake after a separation procedure including dissolved air flotation with polyaluminum chloride and centrifugation during four months, April, June, August and October. The algal biochemical components varied over the period; lipids from 0.7% to 2.1% ash-free dry weight (afdw), protein from 20.9% to 33.4% afdw and ash from 36.6% to 45.2% dry weight. The algae in June had the highest lipid and protein concentrations, leading to a maximum biocrude oil yield of 24.3% afdw. Biodiversity analysis using pyrosequencing revealed different distributions of microbial communities, specifically in April (89.0%), June (63.7%) and August (84.0%), and in April (2.2%), June (12.0%) and August (1.0%). This study demonstrated remarkable temporal changes in the biochemical composition and biodiversity of algae harvested from Dianchi Lake and changes in biocrude oil production potential.

深海海洋生态系统与海洋生态保护区发展趋势

摘要:

本文介绍了深海生态系统的类型及研究现状、面临的主要问题、关键需求及对策。与浅海生态系统相比,深海样品获取困难、已知数据少、研究程度较低。深海栖息着丰富多彩的生物群落,例如深海热泉中分布的具有特化营养体的管状蠕虫及极端嗜热古菌、冷泉区分布的硫酸盐还原菌共生的贻贝及蛤类、海山区域高度多样性的生物群落、捕食浮游生物的冷水珊瑚以及形态奇特的深渊狮子鱼,这些均迥异于其他生态环境,具有很高的生态研究价值。近年来,我国对深海资源的开发需求日益增强,深海探测技术迅速发展为深海生态系统的研究提供了契机,开展深海生物多样性研究并发展深海生态系统理论模型,成为迫在眉睫且切实可行的重要任务。为此,提出建立深海生物数据库、平衡深海资源利用与生态保护的关系、发展深海生态理论模型、加快管理对策和法律文书的制定等深海生态系统的保护对策建议。
