Solvability and thermal response of cellulose with different crystal configurations

摘要:

Cellulose is a biodegradable and renewable natural material that it is naturally resistant to breaking and modification. Moreover, the crystalline structure of cellulose is a major factor restricting its industrial utilization. In this study, cellulose polymorphs were prepared from natural cellulose, and their solvability and thermal response were investigated. Using liquid- and solid-state NMR signals, the distinct types and dissolving states of cellulose polymorphs were identified. The thermal behavior of the polymorphic forms of cellulose-d was also evaluated, and cellulose II exhibited the poorest thermal stability and a unique exothermic reaction.

Large-scale synthesis of isolated Mn2O3 nanotube/fiber with ferric nitrate as catalyst

摘要: Isolated MnO nanotubes and nanofibers were prepared very easily at a large scale with the liquid-phase catalysis method. The MnO nanotubes had dimensions of 30 50 nm (exterior diameter) and 0.2 1.0 ?m (length), approximately. The O nanofibers had dimensions of 10 30 nm (diameter) and 0.4 2.0 ?m (length), approximately. Nano-O with different microstructures including nanotubes, nanofibers and nanoparticles could be selectively synthesized by controlling the contents and proportions of potassium permanganate and ferric nitrate. Ferric nitrate was an ideal catalyst for the preparation of O nanotube/fiber. When cobalt nitrate or nickel nitrate was used as catalyst, only amorphous nano-O was synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) result shows that the O nanotube has a crystalline structure different from o-O, t-O, h-O and ?-O.

Experiments on the effect of the pressure on the mineral transformation of coal ash under the different reaction atmosphere

摘要: This paper investigated the effect of the pressures, reaction atmospheres and coal ash species on the ash fusibility with high-pressure thermogravimetric analysis (PTGA) apparatus and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Each specimen analyzed by XRD was observed for the mineral conversion and formation of new minerals with the pressures under different atmospheres. These results indicate that the pressure restrains the transformation and decomposition of minerals. Many low-temperature minerals are still present under the elevated pressure. The different reaction atmospheres have different effects on the formation of coal ash minerals. Under the N atmosphere, the present microcline may decrease the melting temperature of coal ash. And later, it transforms into sanidine at high pressure; thus, the melting temperature of coal ash may increase. Under the CO atmosphere, the minerals such as microcline, lomonitite, geothite and illite are still present with the increase in pressure; this may reduce the melting temperature. While under the H O atmosphere, there are magnetite and anorthoclase, which may produce the low-temperature eutectics decreasing the melting temperature. The coal ash abundance in basic oxides or higher SiO , Fe O , K O and Na O has lower melting temperature. While the ash sample with more SiO and Al O and less Fe O and basic oxides may lead to higher melting temperature.

Establishing two-stage interaction between fly ash and NaOH by X-ray and infrared analyses

摘要: The interaction of the fly ash and NaOH, in an open reflux hydrothermal system at 100°C, has been explored by several researchers and formation of fly ash zeolites has been confirmed based on the X-ray diffraction analysis of the residues. However, this method does not reveal much about the characteristic transitions (viz. elemental, electro-negativity and cation exchange capacity) of the residues. In this situation, resorting to Fourier transform-infrared radiation (FT-IR) spectroscopy on the residues obtained from two-stage hydrothermal treatment process, described in this manuscript, appears to be a novel idea to establish transitions in chemical bonds (viz., -Si-OH-Al-, OH-Na, OH-Al-), crystallinity and cation exchange capacity of these residues. Based on extensive studies, it has been demonstrated that FT-IR spectroscopy is extremely useful for 1) detection of chemical bonds in the residues, 2) evaluation of zeolites in the residues and 3) also establishing the superiority of the two-stage interaction of the fly ash with NaOH for synthesizing better fly ash zeolites (viz., Na-P1 and Hydroxysodalte) as compared to those obtained from the conventional single-stage treatment of the fly ash.

β-Nickel hydroxide cathode material for nano-suspension redox flow batteries

摘要: As part of an effort to build a prototype flow battery system using a nano-suspension containing β-Ni(OH) nanoparticles as the cathode material, nano-sized β-Ni(OH) particles with well-controlled particle size and morphology were synthesized via the one-step precipitation of a NiCl precursor. The composition and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns confirmed that β-Ni(OH) was successfully synthesized, while SEM results showed that the particle sizes range from 70 to 150 nm. To ensure that Ni(OH) could be employed in the nano-suspension flow battery, the electrochemical performance of the synthesized β-Ni(OH) was initially tested in pouch cells through charge/discharge cycling. The phase transformations occurring during charge/discharge were investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy to obtain the shift in the oxidation state of Ni (X-ray adsorption near edge structure, XANES) and the distances between Ni and surrounding atoms in charged and discharged states (extended X-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS). XANES results indicated that the electrode in the discharged state was a mixture of phases because the edge position did not shift back completely. XAFS results further proved that the discharge capacity was provided by β-NiOOH and the ratio between β-Ni(OH) and g-NiOOH in the electrode in the discharged state was 71:29. Preliminary nano-suspension tests in a lab-scale cell were conducted to understand the behavior of the nano-suspension during charge/discharge cycling and to optimize the operating conditions.
