Managing airport stormwater containing deicers: challenges and opportunities

摘要: Stormwater runoff at airports is a significant and costly issue, especially for the stormwater laden with deicing contaminants of high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and aquatic toxicity. To reduce the loading of deicing constituents in stormwater and to manage the increasing pressure of tightening regulations, identifying fate and transport and evaluating environmental risks of deicing stormwater are of critical importance. In this review, the regulatory development of airport deicing stormwater management was first discussed, along with the milestone publication. The deicer usage and fugitive losses can be reduced and the amount of deicer collected can be increased by having a better understanding of the fate and transport of deicing constituents in stormwater. As such, an overview and evaluation of the constituents of concern in deicers were provided to support the assessment of environmental impacts and mitigation recommendations. The state of knowledge of airport deicing stormwater management was then reviewed, which needs to be synthesized into a national guidance document. A guidebook and a decision tool for airports were proposed to adopt specific practical stormwater management strategies while balancing their priorities in environmental, economic, and social values against operational constraints. These challenges pose great opportunities to improve the current practices of airport deicing stormwater management.

Sustainability has become increasingly important, however, relatively little attention has focused on metrics for the construction and operation of airport and roadway infrastructure. Most attention has focused on buildings, with high profile BREEAM and LEED projects taking center stage. Sustainability is also important in airport and roadway infrastructure projects, which have significant public impact but have a much lower profile than vertical construction when it comes to sustainability. Sustainable infrastructure is important in China and India where new infrastructure is under construction to meet growing and developing economies, and in the US, where infrastructure is in substandard condition and requires reconstruction. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and discussion of sustainability rating systems for airport and roadway infrastructure, including both construction and operation. Specific projects that highlight both proven and innovative sustainable practices are included to illustrate the application of these concepts. Finally, the relationship between sustainable transportation infrastructure and resilient transportation infrastructure is addressed since resiliency is of growing interest and there is overlap between these concepts.

Optimization of polyurethane-bonded thin overlay mixture designation for airport pavement

摘要: This research explored the application potential of PUM thin-overlay technology on airport rapid maintenance. The rapid curing process of polyurethane binder determines the limited time window for mixing and construction of polyurethane-bonded mixture (PUM), which presents significant difference with hot-mix asphalt (HMA) technology. Therefore, this research investigated and optimized the mix design of PUM for airport thin-overlay technology based on its thermosetting characteristics. First, limestone and basalt were comprehensively compared as an aggregate for PUM. Then, the effects of molding and curing conditions were studied in terms of mixing time, molding method, molding parameters and curing temperature. Statistical analysis was also conducted to evaluate the effects of gradation and particle size on PUM performances based on gray relational analysis (GRA), thus determining the key particle size to control PUM performances. Finally, the internal structural details of PUM were captured by X-ray CT scan test. The results demonstrated that it only took 12 hours to reach 75% of maximum strength at a curing temperature of 50 °C, indicating an efficient curing process and in turn allowing short traffic delay. The internal structural details of PUM presented distribution of tiny pores with few connective voids, guaranteeing waterproof property and high strength.

摘要:

浦东国际机场东移建在潮滩之上,少占用了土地,却也影响了长江河口的湿地生态环境。上海市非常重视市政工程建设与湿地环境保护的问题,通过在长江河口的九段沙岛实施种青引鸟的生态工程,补偿湿地被占用而失去的生态功能;在九段沙中沙和下沙共引种芦苇(Phragmite communis)和互花米草(Spartina alterniflora)90 hm2。经过3年连续监测,植物种群生长和扩散良好,鸟类数量有所增长,生态工程取得初步成功。

Seismic ground motion analysis of Shanghai Pudong Airport site considering the effects of spatial correlation

摘要: The terminal No. II of Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located at Pudong District of Shanghai City near shore of East China Sea, and the area of the long-span terminal is 400 m × 200 m. The construction site of the terminal locates on the irregular topography, and its alluvium achieves about 300 m in thickness. The spatial correlation of seismic ground motion, as well as the amplification of soft alluvium and the effect of irregular topography, should be considered. This paper uses a simplified method to obtain the response spectrum of the engineering bedrock under the irregular topography. The spectrum is used to generate the sets of spatially correlative horizontal and vertical seismic motions. The surface ground motion was calculated under incidence of the spatially correlative seismic motion by 2D finite element method (FEM) model considering nonlinear properties of the soil by means of the equivalent linear method. In order to compare the effect of 2D irregular topography, the seismic response analysis of 1D model is carried out by using the equivalent linear method. For indicating the effect of the spatial correlation of input motions, the horizontal uniform inputs, as well as the horizontal and vertical uniform input are carried out for the seismic response analysis of the site. Finally, some characteristics of seismic ground motion calculated for previously mentioned cases are compared.

南极机场冰雪跑道工程技术发展现状与展望

摘要:

世界强国针对南极科技前沿、地缘政治、开发利用权益的争夺趋于激烈。我国建设和运营南极航空基础设施,有利于提升我国在南极的综合影响力、扩大南极科学考察规模、满足人员和物资快速投送需求,战略发展价值突出。本文较全面地分析了南极机场建设现状,凝练了我国开展冰雪机场建设面临的技术挑战;解析了极地科考强国在南极机场冰雪跑道建设方面的工程技术体系,据此梳理我国开展南极机场冰雪跑道建设所需掌握的重点技术。研究表明,我国未来的南极大型机场跑道建设,涉及的工程技术体系应涵盖三大工程步骤(机场跑道选址、道面材料设计、道面人工处理)和 1 项核心技术(压实雪层技术)。结合我国南极科学考察创新发展对航空运输能力建设的顶层需求,论证提出重点研究方向:机场选址及建设的自然环境条件研究,压实雪层技术,冰雪跑道施工装备技术,机场运行指挥监测体系设计。
