Piezoelectric materials have become the most attractive functional materials for sensors and actuators in smart structures because they can directly convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vise versa. They have excellent electromechanical coupling characteristics and excellent frequency response. In this article, some research activities on the applications of piezoelectric materials in smart structures, including semi-active vibration control based on synchronized switch damping using negative capacitance, energy harvesting using new electronic interfaces, structural health monitoring based on a new type of piezoelectric fibers with metal core, and active hysteresis control based on new modified Prandtl-Ishlinskii model at the Aeronautical Science Key Laboratory for Smart Materials and Structures, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics are introduced.

Dynamic characteristics of a magnetorheological pin joint for civil structures

Magnetorheological (MR) pin joint is a novel device in which its joint moment resistance can be controlled in real-time by altering the applied magnetic field. The smart pin joint is intended to be used as a controllable connector between the columns and beams of a civil structure to instantaneously shift the structural natural frequencies in order to avoid resonance and therefore to reduce unwanted vibrations and hence prevent structural damage. As an intrinsically nonlinear device, modelling of this MR fluid based device is a challenging task and makes the design of a suitable control algorithm a cumbersome situation. Aimed at its application in civil structure, the main purpose of this paper is to test and characterise the hysteretic behaviour of MR pin joint. A test scheme is designed to obtain the dynamic performance of MR pin joint in the dominant earthquake frequency range. Some unique phenomena different from those of MR damper are observed through the experimental testing. A computationally-efficient model is proposed by introducing a hyperbolic element to accurately reproduce its dynamic behaviour and to further facilitate the design of a suitable control algorithm. Comprehensive investigations on the model accuracy and dependences of the proposed model on loading condition (frequency and amplitude) and input current level are reported in the last section of this paper.

Stress induced polarization switching and coupled hysteretic dynamics in ferroelectric materials

The dynamic responses of ferroelectric materials upon external mechanical and electrical stimulations are inherently nonlinear and coupled. In the current paper, a macroscopic differential model is constructed for the coupled hysteretic dynamics via modeling the orientation switching induced in the materials. A non-convex potential energy is constructed with both mechanic and electric field contributions. The governing equations are formulated as nonlinear ordinary differential equations by employing the Euler-Lagrange equation, and can be easily recast into a state space form. Hysteresis loops associated with stress induced polarization switching and butterfly-shaped behavior in ferroelectric materials are also successfully captured. The effects of mechanical loadings on the electrically induced switching are numerically investigated, as well as the mechanically-induced switching with various bias electric fields.

为了对抗软件老化,提出一种细粒度的、事前的、主动的多级软件抗衰技术。通过分析系统资源的 占用和损耗情况,判定系统性能的衰退规律,并据此制定了基于时间的多级软件抗衰策略和基于检测的多级软 件抗衰策略,采用有限状态自动机对两种策略进行形式化描述,最后通过Web服务案例说明策略的制定过程, 给出仿真结果。实验表明,较之单一系统级软件抗衰,多级抗衰策略可以进一步缩短MTTR,提供更高的系统可 用性,同时将抗衰成本降到更低。

In this paper, a novel rate-dependent Prandtl-Ishlinskii (P-I) model is proposed to characterize the rate-dependent hysteresis nonlinearity of piezoelectric actuators. The new model is based on a modified rate-dependent play operator, in which a dynamic envelope function is introduced to replace the input function of the classical play operator. Moreover, a dynamic density function is utilized in the proposed P-I model. The parameters of the proposed model are identified by a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm. Finally, experiments are conducted on a piezo-actuated nanopositioning stage to validate the proposed P-I model under the sinusoidal inputs. The experimental results show that the developed rate-dependent P-I model precisely characterize the rate-dependent hysteresis loops up to 1000 Hz.

神经网络滞环控制就是将神经网络和滞环比较器这两种方法相结合的一种控制方法。滞环控制是控 制方法中较为简单的一种,它不需要系统太多的参数,实时性较好,但用滞环控制方法时系统开关频率不固定, 这不仅影响电子开关的使用寿命,而且降低了系统的稳定性。将二者结合的控制方法不仅可实现神经网络对快 速变量的控制,而且可以提高滞环控制的性能。通过训练神经网络能够完成滞环比较器的功能,并可取代滞环 比较器。给出了计算机仿真结果,神经网络通过DSP实现。

A three-stage molding process involving microcellular injection molding with core retraction and an “out-of-mold” expansion was developed to manufacture thermoplastic polyurethane into lightweight foams of varying local densities, microstructures, and mechanical properties in the same microcellular injection molded part. Two stages of cavity expansion through sequential core retractions and a third expansion in a separate mold at an elevated temperature were carried out. The densities varied from 0.25 to 0.42 g/cm3 (77% to 62% weight reduction). The mechanical properties varied as well. Cyclic compressive strengths and hysteresis loss ratios, together with the microstructures, were characterized and reported.

水波与淤泥质底床相互作用数值模拟——基于滞后回路特征的淤泥体流变模型

应用一个滞后回路特征的半经验的淤泥体流变模型描述表面水波作用下底床软泥层的振荡运动,建立了表面水波与淤泥质底床相互作用的垂向二维耦合模型。在数值处理上,为提高数值格式对水-泥界面附近流动的分辨力,较好地再现界面附近速度梯度大的流动特点,采用垂向对数网格处理技巧。模型验证是通过计算水波波高衰减率和底床软泥体输移速度,并与有关的实验测量数据进行比较。
