Uncertainty propagation analysis by an extended sparse grid technique

JIA, C. JIANG, C. M. FU, B. Y. NI, C. S. WANG, M. H. PING

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2019, Volume 14, Issue 1,   Pages 33-46 doi: 10.1007/s11465-018-0514-x

Abstract: In this paper, an uncertainty propagation analysis method is developed based on an extended sparse grid technique and maximum entropy principle, aiming at improving the solving accuracy of the high-order moments and hence the fitting accuracy of the probability density function (PDF) of the system response. The proposed method incorporates the extended Gauss integration into the uncertainty propagation analysis. Moreover, assisted by the Rosenblatt transformation, the various types of extended integration points are transformed into the extended Gauss-Hermite integration points, which makes the method suitable for any type of continuous distribution. Subsequently, within the sparse grid numerical integration framework, the statistical moments of the system response are obtained based on the transformed points. Furthermore, based on the maximum entropy principle, the obtained first four-order statistical moments are used to fit the PDF of the system response. Finally, three numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which includes two mathematical problems with explicit expressions and an engineering application with a black-box model.

Non-thermal plasma for exhaust gases treatment

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2015, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 301-305 doi: 10.1007/s11465-015-0344-z

Abstract:

This article describes a study on a non-thermal plasma device to treat exhaust gases in an internal combustion engine. Several tests using a plasma device to treat exhaust gases are conducted on a Honda GX200-196 cm3 engine at different rotational speeds. A plasma reactor could be efficient in degrading nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Monoxide and carbon dioxide treatment is minimal. However, achieving 1%–3% degradation may be interesting to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Abstract:

Linear, interactive and quadratic effects of process parameters were studied.

Degradation of Ofloxacin (Ofx) was related with G value of irradiation process.

The synergistic effect of H2O2 on lower dose of g-irradiation was established.

The process follows pseudo first order with dose constant (d = 0.232 kGy1).

Shear design of high strength concrete prestressed girders

LABIB,Hemant B. DHONDE,Thomas T. C. HSU,Y. L. MO

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 373-387 doi: 10.1007/s11709-014-0087-7

Abstract: Normal strength prestressed concrete I-girders are commonly used as the primary superstructure components in highway bridges. However, shear design guidelines for high strength PC girders are not available in the current structural codes. Recently, ten 7.62 m (25 feet) long girders made with high strength concrete were designed, cast, and tested at the University of Houston (UH) to study the ultimate shear strength and the shear concrete contribution ( ) as a function of concrete strength ( ). A simple semi-empirical set of equations was developed based on the test results to predict the ultimate shear strength of prestressed concrete I-girders. The UH-developed set of equations is a function of concrete strength ( ), web area ( ), shear span to effective depth ratio ( / ), and percentage of transverse steel ( ). The proposed UH-Method was found to accurately predict the ultimate shear strength of PC girders with concrete strength up to 117 MPa (17000 psi) ensuring satisfactory ductility. The UH-Method was found to be not as overly conservative as the ACI-318 (2011) code provisions, and also not to overestimate the ultimate shear strength of high strength PC girders as the AASHTO LRFD (2010) code provisions. Moreover, the proposed UH-Method was found fairly accurate and not exceedingly conservative in predicting the concrete contribution to shear for concrete strength up to 117 MPa (17000 psi).

A simple umbelliferone based fluorescent probe for the detection of nitroreductase

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 2,   Pages 311-314 doi: 10.1007/s11705-017-1697-0

Abstract: A simple nitrobenzyl-umbelliferone (NCOU1) was synthesised containing a nitroreductase (NTR) trigger moiety. The presence of NTR, resulted in the fragmentation of the parent molecule and release of the highly emissive fluorophore umbelliferone an NTR-catalyzed reduction of the nitro group. In the presence of the NTR enzyme, NCOU1 gave rise to a 5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity at 455 nm and was selective for NTR over other reductive enzymes. These results indicate that NCOU1 can be used as a simple assay for the detection of NTR.

Valveless pumping using a two-stage impedance pump

C.-C. LEE, Y. A. ABAKR, K.-C. WOO

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 311-318 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0270-x

Abstract:

Impedance pump is defined as a type of valveless pumping mechanism, where an elastic tube is joined with a tube of different impedance, a periodic asymmetrical compression on part of the elastic tube will produce a unidirectional flow. Numerical and experimental studies had been conducted in the past, but little experimental work was found to exploit the principle of multi-stage impedance pumping for fluid transportation. This paper concentrates on the fluid behavior for an open-loop two-stage system experimentally. The aim of this work is to have an insight on the deliverable head and pumping rate of an open-loop two-stage impedance pumping system. This paper generally investigates the effect of different parameters towards the generation of unidirectional flows and composite flow of two opposite directions. Results obtained are of significant values.
