Polyaniline‒polypyrrole nanocomposites using a green and porous wood as support for supercapacitors

Jian LI, Yue JIAO

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 6, Issue 2,   Pages 137-143 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2019257

Abstract:

Wood is an ideal type of support material whose porous structure and surface functional groups are beneficial for deposition of various guest substances for different applications. In this paper, wood is employed as a porous support, combined with two kinds of conductive polymers (i.e., polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy)) using an easy and fast liquid polymerization method. Scanning electron microscope observations indicate that the PANI‒PPy complex consists of nanoparticles with a size of ~20 nm. The interactions between oxygen-containing groups in the wood and the nitrogen composition of PANI‒PPy were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The self-supported PANI‒PPy/wood composite is capable of acting as a free-standing supercapacitor electrode, which delivers a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 360 F·g at 0.2 A·g .

Immobilization of laccase on organic–inorganic nanocomposites and its application in the removal of phenolic

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 7,   Pages 867-879 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2277-5

Abstract: Polydopamine-functionalized nanosilica was synthesized using an inexpensive and easily obtainable raw material, mild reaction conditions, and simple operation. Subsequently, a flexible spacer arm was introduced by using dialdehyde starch as a cross-linking agent to bind with laccase. A high loading amount (77.8 mg∙g‒1) and activity retention (75.5%) could be achieved under the optimum immobilization conditions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the immobilized laccase had a lower thermal deactivation rate constant and longer half-life. The enhancement of thermodynamic parameters indicated that the immobilized laccase had better thermal stability than free laccase. The residual activity of immobilized laccase remained at about 50.0% after 30 days, which was 4.0 times that of free laccase. Immobilized laccase demonstrated excellent removal of phenolic pollutants (2,4-dichlorophenol, bisphenol A, phenol, and 4-chlorophenol) and perfect reusability with 70% removal efficiency retention for 2,4-dichlorophenol after seven cycles. These results suggested that immobilized laccase possessed great reusability, improved thermal stability, and excellent storage stability. Organic–inorganic nanomaterials have a good application prospect for laccase immobilization, and the immobilized laccase of this work may provide a practical application for the removal of phenolic pollutants.

characteristics of ciprofloxacin onto g-MoS2 coated biochar nanocomposites

Zhenyu Yang, Rong Xing, Wenjun Zhou, Lizhong Zhu

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-019-1218-0

Abstract: The g-MoS2 coated composites (g-MoS2-BC) were synthesized. The coated g-MoS2 greatly increased the adsorption ability of biochar. The synergistic effect was observed for CIP adsorption on g-MoS2-RC700. The adsorption mechanisms of CIP on g-MoS2-BC were proposed. The g-MoS2 coated biochar (g-MoS2-BC) composites were synthesized by coating original biochar with g-MoS2 nanosheets at 300°C(BC300)/700°C (BC700). The adsorption properties of the g-MoS2-BC composites for ciprofloxacin (CIP) were investigated with an aim to exploit its high efficiency toward soil amendment. The specific surface area and the pore structures of biochar coated g-MoS2 nanosheets were significantly increased. The g-MoS2-BC composites provided more π electrons, which was favorable in enhancing the π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions between CIP and biochar. As a result, the g-MoS2-BC composites showed faster adsorption rate and greater adsorption capacity for CIP than the original biochar. The coated g-MoS2 nanosheets contributed more to CIP adsorption on the g-MoS2-BC composites due to their greater CIP adsorption capacity than the original biochar. Moreover, the synergistic effect was observed for CIP adsorption on g-MoS2-BC700, and suppression effect on g-MoS2-BC300. In addition, the adsorption of CIP onto g-MoS2-BC composites also exhibited strong dependence on the solution pH, since it can affect both the adsorbent surface charge and the speciation of contaminants. It was reasonably suggested that the mechanisms of CIP adsorption on g-MoS2-BC composites involved pore-filling effects, π-π EDA interaction, electrostatic interaction, and ion exchange interaction. These results are useful for the modification of biochar in exploiting the novel amendment for contaminated soils.

Polymer nanocomposites for microactuation and magneto-electric transduction

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2009, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 350-354 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0056-3

Abstract: In the last decade, electroactive polymers have attracted much attention especially because of their very actuating capabilities. Large strain is experimentally observed, but under quite high electrical field, which can be a severe drawback for actuating applications. First part of the present paper is concerned with the reduction of applied field onto electroactive polymer films to get a given strain level. Polyurethane (PU) films filled with carbon black (CB) nanoparticles exhibit relatively high strain level under a field of only 12.5 kV/mm. The simple easy-to-make method solution cast method was applied. Even though the generated stress level is still quite low, the present work shows high strain level under quite low field appliance by easy manufacturing, lightweight, and flexible polymer film. Besides, another interest of the present paper is in magneto-elasto-electric effect of a polymer film filled with some magnetic nano particles. Films filled with nonpiezoelectric but with magnetite particles has still short history. With the use of magneto materials, a large magnetic DC bias field is generally required, and it causes big problem on application. The films filled with some magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 and Nickel) are fabricated then examined. It is clearly demonstrated that our films do not require any DC bias. Although linear polarization value is relatively small, the first step of the studies on magnetite nano-filled film is presented.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 2,   Pages 142-149 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0342-1

Abstract: Cementitious materials reinforced with well dispersed multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) at the nanoscale were fabricated and tested. The MWCNTs and CNFs were dispersed by the application of ultrasonic energy and the use of a superplasticizer. Mechanical and fracture properties including flexural strength, Young’s modulus, flexural and fracture toughness were measured and compared with similarly processed reference cement based mixes without the nano-reinforcement. The MWCNTs and CNFs reinforced mortars exhibited superior properties demonstrated by a significant improvement in flexural strength (106%), Young’s modulus (95%), flexural toughness (105%), effective crack length (30%) and fracture toughness (120%).

Performance of iron-air battery with iron nanoparticle-encapsulated C–N composite electrode

Frontiers in Energy doi: 10.1007/s11708-023-0913-5

Abstract: Highly efficient and stable iron electrodes are of great significant to the development of iron-air battery (IAB). In this paper, iron nanoparticle-encapsulated C–N composite (NanoFe@CN) was synthesized by pyrolysis using polyaniline as the C–N source. Electrochemical performance of the NanoFe@CN in different electrolytes (alkaline, neutral, and quasi-neutral) was investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV). The IAB was assembled with NanoFe@CN as the anode and IrO2 + Pt/C as the cathode. The effects of different discharging/charging current densities and electrolytes on the battery performance were also studied. Neutral K2SO4 electrolyte can effectively suppress the passivation of iron electrode, and the battery showed a good cycling stability during 180 charging/discharging cycles. Compared to the pure nano-iron (NanoFe) battery, the NanoFe@CN battery has a more stable cycling stability either in KOH or NH4Cl + KCl electrolyte.
