Correspondence: Monopulse transmitarray antenna fed by aperture-coupled microstrip structure Correspondence

Na KOU, Shixing YU, Zhao DING, Zhengping ZHANG,nkou@gzu.edu.cn,sxyu1@gzu.edu.cn,zding@gzu.edu.cn,zpzhang@gzu.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 3,   Pages 502-510 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000547

Abstract: Monopulse technique, also known as the simultaneous beam comparison method, is used mainly to measure the direction of arrival (DOA) (Sherman and Barton, 2011). Before the advent of monopulse technology, the method most widely used in radar direction finding was the lobe-switching technique (sequential lobing) (Lo, 1999). Compared with the sequential lobing method, the monopulse antenna can obtain information such as the pitch angle, azimuth angle, and distance of the target in a single pulse period (Vazquez-Roy et al., 2019). Due to the need for higher accuracy of angle measurement, the monopulse technique has been widely applied in SOTM missile guidance (Roy et al., 2019). When a monopulse system is working, multiple independent channels are adopted to receive signals reflected by targets at the same time. Then signals enter the comparator and finally the distance and angle information of targets can be obtained. There are three main types of monopulse antennas: lenses, reflectors, and arrays. A dielectric lens is generally a convex lens (Raman et al., 1998), which is difficult to manufacture due to its curved shape, high volume, and large mass. For common reflectors such as dish antennas, the feed and supporting structure are in front of the aperture, so a shielding effect will result in energy loss, sidelobe increase, and angle measurement error (Kou and Cheng, 2019). A more effective reflector is the Cassegrain antenna, which is more compact with dual reflectors (Zheng et al., 2016, 2017). However, the Cassegrain antenna has the problem of shielding effect caused by a secondary reflector and support rods. With growing demand for low cost and lightweight monopulse antennas in modern radar and telecommunications systems, array antennas are increasingly applied in monopulse antennas due to their characteristics of high gain and easy control of the beam direction. A typical example is the waveguide slot array, which has the advantages of low loss, low sidelobe level, and no aperture shielding problem (Vosoogh et al., 2018). The microstrip has attracted much attention in monopulse antennas because of its advantages of low profile, simple structure, and low cost (Yu et al., 2009; Kumar and Kumar, 2018). However, monopulse microstrip array antennas usually have a complex feed network, which often makes them large and expensive. In addition, substrate integrated waveguides (SIWs) (Cao et al., 2017; Zhu et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019; Yang et al., 2019) and leaky wave antennas (LWAs) (Poveda-García et al., 2019) have been applied in monopulse antennas, with good results. Recently, reflectarrays have been proposed for use in monopulse antennas, and have shown good performance (Zhao et al., 2017, 2018). As an alternative to reflectarrays, transmitarrays not only have the advantages of reflectarrays, but also have no shielding effect from the feeds. Di Palma et al. (2016) proposed a 400-element reconfigurable transmitarray antenna to synthesize monopulse radiation patterns. However, the sum and difference patterns generated by the reconfigurable transmitarray antenna, which is controlled electronically by switches instead of by a SUM-DIFF comparator, are in time division.

The Optimization of the Monopulse Antenna Based on Genetic Algorithms

Wang Hongjian,Gao Benqing,Liu Ruixiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 5,   Pages 84-87

Abstract:

The sum and difference patterns as well as the directivity of the monopulse antenna arrays are optimized based on genetic algorithms (GA). When only the sum pattern is optimized as usual, the difference pattern and gain can not be guaranteed, so the track precision and effective distance of the antenna or missile will be impaired. However, using GA, the sum pattern, difference pattern and directivity can be optimized thoroughly for the antenna design.

A Polarization Programmable Antenna Array Article

Dingzhao Chen, Yanhui Liu, Ming Li, Pan Guo, Zhuo Zeng, Jun Hu, Y. Jay Guo

Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 100-114 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.03.015

Abstract:

Reconfigurable antennas are becoming a major antenna technology for future wireless communications and sensing systems. It is known that, with a single linear polarization (LP) reconfigurable antenna element, a preferred polarization can be produced from a set of multiple polarization states, thus improving the quality of the communication link. This paper presents a new concept of a polarization programmable reconfigurable antenna array that consists of a number of polarization reconfigurable antenna elements with a finite number of possible polarization states. By employing a new optimization strategy and programming the polarization states of all the array elements, we demonstrate that it is possible to realize any desired LP in the vectorial array radiation pattern with accurate control of sidelobe and crosspolarization levels (XPLs), thereby achieving the desired polarization to perfectly match that of the required communications signal. Both numerical and experimental results are provided to prove the concept, and they agree well with each other.

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology of designing an integrated with a filter using an active . The filter is directly coupled to the active device, and the integrated filter can achieve filtering as well as matching functionalities, simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate matching networks. The filter is represented by an active , with additional columns and rows in the matrix corresponding to the active transistor. The matrix can be used to calculate the S-parameter responses (i.e., the return loss and the gain) and the initial dimensions of the integrated device. Moreover, the integration of a filter and an leads to a reduced loss and a more compact architecture of the devices. An X-band filter has been designed and demonstrated as an example. technology has been chosen because of its appealing advantages of easy fabrication, low cost, and most importantly, easy integration with active devices.

Gopi RAM, Durbadal MANDAL, Sakti Prasad GHOSHAL, Rajib KAR

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2017, Volume 18, Issue 4,   Pages 570-577 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1500371

Abstract: In this paper, an optimal design of linear antenna arrays having microstrip patch antenna elements has been carried out. Cat swarm optimization (CSO) has been applied for the optimization of the control parameters of radiation pattern of an antenna array. The optimal radiation patterns of isotropic antenna elements are obtained by optimizing the current excitation weight of each element and the inter-element spacing. The antenna arrays of 12, 16, and 20 elements are taken as examples. The arrays are designed by using MATLAB computation and are validated through Computer Simulation Technology-Microwave Studio (CST-MWS). From the simulation results it is evident that CSO is able to yield the optimal design of linear antenna arrays of patch antenna elements.

Filtering antennas: from innovative concepts to industrial applications Review Articles

Yun-fei CAO, Yao ZHANG, Xiu-yin ZHANG

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 1,   Pages 116-127 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900474

Abstract: A filtering antenna is a device with both filtering and radiating capabilities. It can be used to reduce the cross-band mutual coupling between the closely spaced elements operating at different frequency bands. We review the authors’ work on filtering antenna designs and three related dual-band base-station antenna arrays as application examples. The filtering antenna designs include single- and dual-polarized filtering patch antennas, a single-polarized omni-directional filtering dipole antenna, and a dual-polarized filtering dipole antenna for the base station. The filtering antennas in this paper feature an innovative concept of eliminating extra filtering circuits, unlike other available antennas. For each design, the filtering structure is finely integrated with the radiators or feeding lines. As a result, the proposed designs have the advantages of compact size, simple structure, good in-band radiation performance, and low levels of loss, and do not contain complicated filtering circuits. Based on the proposed filtering antennas, single- and dual-polarized dual-band antenna arrays were developed. Separate antenna elements at different frequency bands were used to achieve the dual-band performance. The cross-band mutual couplings between the elements at different bands were reduced substantially using the antenna inherent filtering performance. The dual-band arrays exhibited better performance as compared to typical industrial products. Some of the proposed technologies have been transferred into the industry.

Planar dual-polarized millimeter-wave shared-aperture array antenna with high band isolation Correspondence

Yuyan CAO, Zijun GUO, Zhangcheng HAO

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 10,   Pages 1568-1578 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2200122

Abstract:

A planar millimeter-wave shared-aperture array antenna is proposed and designed in this paper. By composing the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) and the stripline, the K-band antenna is embedded inside the Ka-band antenna to achieve a smaller size and a low profile by sharing an aperture. The Ka-band antenna radiates through the parallel slot pairs on the surface of the SIW cavities with horizontal polarization, while the K-band antenna radiates through the butterfly-shaped slots with vertical polarization, which are also designed on the surface. Then the two array antennas can radiate by sharing a common aperture with high isolation. To verify this idea, a prototype of an 8×8 shared-aperture array antenna has been designed with center frequencies of 19 and 30 GHz and fabricated using multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) technology. The measurement results show that the −10 dB impedance bandwidths in the K- and Ka-bands are 7.73% and >20%, and the corresponding isolations are higher than 60 and 44 dB, respectively. The proposed shared-aperture antenna has a small footprint, a low profile, and high isolation, and is a promising candidate to design compact millimeterwave wireless systems.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 1,   Pages 62-71 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900466

Abstract: Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is a key technique for communication in the future. It can effectively enhance channel capacity. For future fifth-generation (5G) terminals, it is still a challenging task to realize desirable isolation within a compact size. To achieve an acceptable isolation level, many decoupling methods have been developed. We review the most recent research on decoupling methods, including the employment of external decoupling structures, orthogonal modes, and reduction of ground effect, and discuss the development trends of the MIMO array in 5G smartphones.

Zheng Xing Wang, Hanqing Yang, Ruiwen Shao, Jun Wei Wu, Guobiao Liu, Feng Zhai, Qiang Cheng, Tie Jun Cui

Engineering 2022, Volume 17, Issue 10,   Pages 64-74 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.03.019

Abstract:

Inspired by the design philosophy of information metasurfaces based on the digital coding concept, a planar 4-bit reconfigurable antenna array with low profile of 0.15 λ0 (where λ0 is the wavelength) is presented. The array is based on a digital coding radiation element consisting of a 1-bit magnetoelectric (ME) dipole and a miniaturized reflection-type phase shifter (RTPS). The proposed 1-bit ME dipole can provide two digital states of “0” and “1” (with 0° and 180° phase responses) over a wide frequency band by individually exciting its two symmetrical feeding ports. The designed RTPS is able to realize a relative phase shift of 173°. By digitally quantizing its phase in the range of 157.5°, additional eight digital states at intervals of 22.5° are obtained. To achieve low sidelobe levels, a 1:16 power divider based on the Taylor line source method is employed to feed the array. A prototype of the proposed 4-bit antenna array has been fabricated and tested, and the experimental results are in good agreement with the simulations. Scanning beams within a ±45° range were measured with a maximum realized gain of 13.4 dBi at 12 GHz. The sidelobe and cross-polarization levels are below –14.3 and –23 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the beam pointing error is within 0.8°, and the 3-dB gain bandwidth of the broadside beam is 25%. Due to its outstanding performance, the array holds potential for significant applications in radar and wireless communication systems.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 3,   Pages 377-383 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900581

Abstract: Future communications will provide higher transmission rates and higher operating frequencies. In addition, agile beam tracking will be an inevitable trend in technology development. The terahertz retrodirective antenna array proposed and discussed in this paper can be a better solution for agile beam tracking. The array receives a 40-GHz navigation signal and accurately retransmits a 120-GHz beam in the direction of the arrival wave. Simulation results indicate that the proposed array with a stacked sandwich structure has realized the tracking of the received wave. The scanning radiation pattern shows that the array gain is 23.87 dB at 19.9° when the incident angle is 20° with a relative error of only 0.5%, meaning that there is a lateral error of only 8.7 m at a transmission distance of 5 km.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 1,   Pages 128-143 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900461

Abstract: A type of millimeter-wave antenna array with flexible design is proposed for a variety of applications at 60 GHz. The antenna array can be adjusted to be linearly or circularly polarized by simply changing the radiation part of the antenna array. High gain, wideband, and high radiation efficiency characteristics can be achieved by adopting a low insertion loss feeding network and broadband antenna elements. For the linearly polarized antenna array, simulation results show that the impedance bandwidth of the 2×2 antenna subarray reaches 21.6%, while the maximum gain achieves 15.1 dBi and has a fluctuation of less than 0.4 dBi within the working bandwidth. Simulation results of the 8×8 linearly polarized antenna array show a bandwidth of 21.6% and a gain of (26.1±1) dBi with an antenna efficiency of more than 80%. For the 8×8 circularly polarized antenna array, simulation results show that an impedance bandwidth of 18.2% and an axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 13.3% are obtained. Gain and efficiency of up to 27.6 dBi and 80% are achieved, respectively. A prototype of antenna array is fabricated, and results are compared and analyzed.

Mianfeng HUANG, Juhua LIU,liujh33@mail.sysu.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 4,   Pages 567-581 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2200473

Abstract: An array of two periodic leaky-wave s (LWAs) with scanning is proposed for application in . The array is composed of two periodic LWAs with different periods, in which each LWA generates a narrow beam through the =-1 space harmonic. Due to the two different periods for the two LWAs, two beams with two different directions can be realized, which can be combined into a sum beam when the array is fed in phase or into a difference beam when the array is fed 180° out of phase. The array integrated with 180° hybrid is designed, fabricated, and measured. Measurement results show that the sum beam can reach a gain up to 15.9 dBi and scan from -33.4° to 20.8°. In the scanning range, the direction of the null in the difference beam is consistent with the direction of the sum beam, with the lowest null depth of -40.8 dB. With the excellent performance, the provides an alternative solution with low complexity and low cost for .

Wide-Angle Scanning Antennas for Millimeter-Wave 5G Applications Article

Engineering 2022, Volume 11, Issue 4,   Pages 60-73 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.10.017

Abstract:

The fifth generation (5G) network communication systems operate in the millimeter waves and are expected to provide a much higher data rate in the multi-gigabit range, which is impossible to achieve using current wireless services, including the sub-6 GHz band. In this work, we briefly review several existing designs of millimeter-wave phased arrays for 5G applications, beginning with the low-profile antenna array designs that either are fixed beam or scan the beam only in one plane. We then move on to array systems that offer two-dimensional (2D) scan capability, which is highly desirable for a majority of 5G applications. Next, in the main body of the paper, we discuss two different strategies for designing scanning arrays, both of which circumvent the use of conventional phase shifters to achieve beam scanning. We note that it is highly desirable to search for alternatives to conventional phase shifters in the millimeter-wave range because legacy phase shifters are both lossy and costly; furthermore, alternatives such as active phase shifters, which include radio frequency amplifiers, are both expensive and power-hungry. Given this backdrop, we propose two different antenna systems with potential for the desired 2D scan performance in the millimeter-wave range. The first of these is a Luneburg lens, which is excited either by a 2D waveguide array or by a microstrip patch antenna array to realize 2D scan capability. Next, for second design, we turn to phased-array designs in which the conventional phase shifter is replaced by switchable PIN diodes or varactor diodes, inserted between radiating slots in a waveguide to provide the desired phase shifts for scanning. Finally, we discuss several approaches to enhance the gain of the array by modifying the conventional array configurations. We describe novel techniques for realizing both one-dimensional (1D) and 2D scans by using a reconfigurable metasurface type of panels.Graphical abstractA number of designs for scanning antennas are presented in this work to realize a one- or two-dimensional scan. The first of these is a Luneburg lens, together with a feed array, designed to realize a wide-angle scan The the second design is based on the use of an electronically reconfigurable phase shifter, which utilizes PIN or varactor diodes inserted between radiating slots in a curved waveguide to provide the desired phase shifts. Next, the paper introduces a novel design to realize both one- and two-dimensional scans, by using reconfigurable metasurface type of panels to provide a wide-angle beam-scanning performance, without compromising either the impedance match or the gain of the array. Additionally, the paper describes several techniques for enhancing the gain of the array to achieve gain levels as high as 30 dB, to render the scanning array competitive with reflectors, for instance.Download : Download high-res image (52KB)Download : Download full-size image

Deceptive jamming discrimination based on range-anglelocalization of a frequency diverse array Article

Zhao-jian ZHANG, Jun-wei XIE, Chuan SHENG, Zhun TANG

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2017, Volume 18, Issue 9,   Pages 1437-1446 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1601577

Abstract: We propose a method to suppress deceptive jamming by frequencydiverse array (FDA) in radar electronic countermeasure environments.FDA offers a new range-angle-dependent beam pattern through a smallfrequency increment across elements. Due to the coupling between theangle and range, a mismatch between the test angle and physical angleoccurs when the slant range on which the beam focuses is not equalto the slant range of the real target. In addition, the range of thetarget can be extracted by sum-difference beam except for time-delaytesting, because the beam provides a range resolution in the FDA thatcannot be deceived by traditional deceptive jamming. A strategy ofusing FDA to transmit two pulses with zero and nonzero frequency increments, respectively, is proposed to ensure that the angle of a target canbe obtained by FDA. Moreover, the localization performance is examinedby analyzing the Cramer-Rao lower bound and detection probability.Effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by simulation results.
