Philosophy Thinking on Engineering and Engineering Management

Abstract:

Nowadays,with rapid economy development in China,many magnificent projects have been built and put into use continuously,which reveals the important status and tremendous effects of engineering management and indicates a new engineering age for our country. Engineering philosophy is called for in the engineering age and is indispensable in supervising the practices of project construction management. It is not only a necessity of philosophy development, but also an urgent request in this age when engineering philosophy research is promoted greatly. Based on the discussion on the forming,developing and main research content of engineering philosophy,this paper put forwards the philosophy connotation and essence of engineering as corporality,variability and pertinence with time and space. It further discussed the philosophy connotation of some aspects of engineering management such as ideas,axiology,methodology, organization and innovation,in order to accelerate the progress in our country of both engineering management theories and practices.

Engineering in the Field of Vision of Philosophy

Abstract:

Through a study on materialist conception of history, it is indicated that engineering is a basic practical activity during humanity existence and development, and always a direct productivity at different historical periods. The engineering activity appeared before science activity. It is also believed that the knowledge and activity which relates to nature should be divided into three components of science, technology and engineering.The main characters of the science activity are "exploration"  and "discovery" , the main characters of the technology activity are "invention"  and " innovation" , and the main characters of the engineering activity are "integration"  and " construction" . From a point of view of modern knowledge, a related knowledge chain (knowledge network) exists among science-technology-engineering-industry. The relationship between engineering and industry is more direct and closes.The engineering is a practical activity of humanity for maintaining existence, multiplication and development, and constructing "homeland"  and "living"  well, and is also an embodiment of human wisdom and seeked "ideal" . From a point of view of philosophy, the result of the engineering activity usually embodies in constructing a new existence, i.e. an integrator of optimized construction under a certain boundary condition. Engineering integration contains various technical element integration, and also contains optimization-integration of technical element and basic elements of economics, society and management under a certain condition.Under a condition of new century, engineering is an important field of innovation activity, should be a new field of philosophy consideration. The transcendence of philosophy and engineering exists various "intermingling"  and "merging" . Therefore, engineering needs philosophy, and philosophy needs to face engineering. An interaction of engineering and philosophy is a feature raising in the Chinese engineering philosophy.

At last there is a brief comparison between predominant characteristics in the field of philosophy of engineering in China and those in the West.

Philosophic View on Exploration Engineering of Daqing Oil Field at a New Stage

Abstract:

During the 10th "five year"  plan, the exploration work in Daqing Oil Field was conducted positively from the perspective of philosophy, with new achievements and 4 new inspirations. The first inspiration tells that cognition sources from practice, and confined practice would result in limited cognition, only by judging historical events progressively and evolutionarily could made great innovations. The second inspiration expounds that exploratory risks exist objectively and associate with chances. Solving the conflicts between risks and chances is the key to success. The third inspiration illustrates that oil-finding ability is productive force, while organizing and managing being production relations.Productive force would be accelerated by adequate production relations. The fourth inspiration concludes that freeing exploration ideas is the internal cause and foundation while development of exploration technology being the external cause and condition. External causes would take effect through internal causes, and generate qualitative change. "2 identification technologies"  innovated together with the new development of "3 engineering technologies"  in Daqing Oil Field have beneficially supported the exploration prospects.

Enhancing the management of oil production engineering with philosophical thinking

Abstract:

In the history of Chinese petroleum industry,the philosophical thinking is always used to guide practice. The Daqing Oilfield was developed based on the philosophical thoughts of Mao Zedong, i.e., On Practice and On Contradictions. Relying on the philosophical thoughts,the management and technology innovationsystem was continuously improved,and the technology management system with Daqing Oilfield characteristics was developed. This paper applies the thoughts of the "Two Theory" in oil production engineering,and analyzes the major challenges and countermeasures for the stable production of 4.0×107 to Daqing Oilfield. The scientific methodology of practice is used to guide the technical schemes and solutions. The "Two Theory" is proved to be effective to guarantee the stable production of 4.0×107 t.

Engineering philosophical thinking of the old mining area transformation development

Abstract:

The transformation development of the old mining area is a complex system engineering, it needs to command the overall situation by standing on the height of system engineering and needs to follow the harmonization in engineering, nature, science, technology, industry, economy and society. Engineering innovation is the main part of the technology innovations, it pushes the development of scientific, technical, industrial, economic and social, also the engineering innovation is relied on scientific and technological progress. Ecological protection is the premise of engineering development, and the ecological engineering construction is promoted by economic development. The protecting and mining of rare coking coal resources is a unity of oppisites. The companies of producting coking coal must pursue both immediate and long-term interests, especially the old mining, so the company should resolve the conflict between the scarcity of resources and the growth of demands by implementing limited exploitation, increasing resource recovery and efficiently recycling of coking coal resources to build the big-vertical-deep industry group. The conflict between frequent accidents and high input of existing security control promotes the development of security theory and technology, the transformation of security theory and technology from system security to structural security is a inevitable process of development.

All of Chinese iron ore reserves are lean ores and the resource utilization is very low. Led by the idea of engineering philosophy and based on technological integration and creation,Ansteel Group established the "five grades ganged" engineering management mode. It views mining and metallurgical engineering, including the geologic,mining,ore blending,concentration and smelting engineering,as a whole and considers the geological,mining,feed,concentrate and charging grades together with objective of the integrated optimization of the overall costs. With the establishment and application of the "five grades ganged" mode,Ansteel Group has solved the lean iron ores exploitation problem and supported the"self-sufficiency-based" resource strategy.

On Engineering Management Methodology

Abstract:

In this paper, the framework system of engineering management methodology has been constructed on the three levels: philosophical methodology, general methodology and specific methodology. The main methods of philosophical methodology of engineering management include seeking truth from facts, contradiction analysis, unity of knowledge and practice, unity of truth and value and dialectical thinking. The general methodology of engineering management is represented by system science, information science and mathematical methods. The main methods of the specific methodology of engineering management are composed of case study and other nine methods. This framework is not absolute as the methods of system engineering and project management are extended to all the three levels.

In the innovation practice of coal mine construction and development, Shendong mining area abides by the project philosophy of "systematism, objectiveness, efficiency" , and finds the best combination of subjectiveness and objectiveness through systematic thinking and whole advancement. By in-time management and integration of new technology, new material, new equipment and new technique, Shendong has succesfully constructed the 10-milllion-ton mine group different from the traditional mode, and established the first 100-million-ton coal mining production base in the world. Shendong's overrall productivity efficiency, production scale, safety level, environmental-protection level and resource recovery rate all reach the world advanced level.

Based on the concept of sustainable development, the thoughtway of engineering philosophy is adopted to explore the decision-making problems of giant projects. It is proposed to use new ideas and new ways to solve complex giant projects decision-making, and a model of giant projects decision-making is built, the main contents of which are "Three Core Principles"  of giant projects decision-making, that is, whether the project could last as long as possible, whether the project could make any dramatic change to the development of the society and whether the project could bring any benefit to the public and social development.

Learning from Academician Qian Xuesen

Abstract:

This article gives a brief account of Academician Qian Xuesen´s life and reviews his outstanding contributions to the development of China´s science and technology in over half of the past century. He always takes Marxist philosophy of dialectical materialism as foothold and starting point whenever studing and obseving problems. He stated that all the modern scientific and technological disciplines should belong to the knowledge hierarchy which was under the guidance of Marxist philosophy of dialectical materialism. The article describes that 50 year ago Qian had made a penetrating exposition on the dialectical relationship between science and technology. His scientific thesis still has important directive function in formulating and promulgating China´s scientific and technological policies. The article devotes a lot of space to describing Qiao´s contributions to engineering cybernetics and systems science. The article also describes the worldwide repercussions and influence evoked by the publishment of Qian´s book Engineering Cybernetics. Besides,Qian summed up the conept and method of systems engineering based on his working environment and experience. This concept has been accepted by many statesmen for analyzing and solving key issues.

Some considerations on climate change based on philosophic principle

Abstract:

Based on basic principle of philosophy, the problem of global climate change is discussed by citing the data of geologic history and hydrometeor. The result shows that global climate change is continuing and the main motive force causing climate change is nature itself but not mankind; the current stage of climate change is a fluctuation part of whole stage of climate change and the change tendency is not eternality; the scope of the current stage of climate change is not exceeding the one of historical climate change. According to the points mentioned above, it may be concluded that the artificial emission of CO2 is not the main factor causing global climate change. So it is reasonable to analyze and treat particular climate change problem with special measure in the condition of different space-time.Finally some suggestions on dealing with the problem of climate change about China are proposed.
