Influence of Particle Size on Laser Absorption and Scanning Track Formation Mechanisms of Pure Tungsten Powder during Selective Laser Melting Article

Jiayao Zhang, Dongdong Gu, Ying Yang, Hongmei Zhang, Hongyu Chen, Donghuai Dai, Kaijie Lin

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 736-745 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.07.003

Abstract:

A three-dimensional laser absorption model based on ray tracing was established to describe the coupled interaction of a laser beam with particles in the powder layers of pure tungsten (W) material processed by selective laser melting (SLM). The influence of particle size on the powder-to-laser absorptivity and underlying absorption behavior was investigated. An intrinsic relationship between the absorption, distribution of absorbed irradiance within the powder layers, and surface morphology and geometric characteristics (e.g., contact angle, width and height of tracks, and remelted depth) of the laser scanning tracks is presented here. Simulation conclusions indicate that the absorptivity of the powder layers considerably exceeds the single powder particle value or the dense solid material value. With an increase in particle size, the powder layer absorbs less laser energy. The maximum absorptivity of the W powder layers reached 0.6030 at the particle size of 5 μm. The distribution of laser irradiance on the particle surface was sensitive to particle size, azimuthal angle, and the position of the powder particles on the substrate. The maximum irradiance in the powder layers decreased from 1.117×10–3 to 0.85×10–3 W·μm–2 and the contour of the irradiance distribution in the center of the irradiated area gradually contracted when the particle size increased from 5 to 45 μm. An experimental study on the surface morphologies and cross-sectional geometric characteristics of SLM-fabricated W material was performed, and the experimental results validated the mechanisms of the powder-to-laser-absorption behavior that were obtained in simulations. This work provides a scientific basis for the application of the ray-tracing model to predict the wetting and spreading ability of melted tracks during SLM additive manufacturing in order to yield a sound laser processability.

Tan Zhongsheng,Wang Mengshu,Luo Shixiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2009, Volume 11, Issue 7,   Pages 39-44

Abstract:

The construction of the Qiongzhou strait tunnel will not only meet the requirements of the straits' passenger and cargo traffic, but also the needs of national defense, and the constructed tunnel will play a huge pulling role in Hainan´s economic development.Comparing with the similar projects abroad, the preliminary work of Qiongzhou strait tunnel was very urgent and needed a long time, because of enormous workload of research, complex technology and difficulties. Based on the study of meteorological, hydrological, geological data and other information of Qiongzhou strait tunnel, the bridge and tunnel schemes are simply compared, which indicate that the tunnel scheme is suitable, moreover, the shield tunnel scheme for line Ⅱ is better than others. After compared the shallow tunnel with deep tunnel schemes of line Ⅱ, the shallow tunnel using shield method scheme is proposed. As highway tunnel had many technical problems, and project costs and operating costs are very high, therefore, the railway tunnel plan as the preferred option is feasible, and cars could pass through the tunnel by shuttle trains.

Abstract:

Global warming is the most serious environmental problem that we ever had. One of the reasons for that focus on the mass emission of greenhouse gas has made the cosmopolitan warming problem more and more serious. It is such a great threaten to our environment that the international community must take active and effective measures. In 2006, a 973 project named "Research for Utilizing Greenhouse Gas as Resource in EOR and Storaging It Underground "  was authorized by The Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China. The researches include establishing a system suits China`s national conditions and sequestrate CO2 effectively, obtaining society benefit from reducing CO2 emission and obtaining economic benefit from CO2 utilization, developing CO2 storage theories, phase state of multiphase and multicomponent mixtures, nonlinear percolation mechanisms of multiphase and multicomponent mixtures and CO2 capture & transport.. In China the CO2 sequestration security and the efficient use of research is at the international level. From those basic researches above, it is expected to get state owned CO2 storage and utilization technology, which will be served as useful theory and practice basis for efficiently global resource & environment development and sustainable development.

The analysis of specific energy applied in Bohai Strait tunnel during TBM construction

Gao Pan,Zou Chong

Strategic Study of CAE 2013, Volume 15, Issue 12,   Pages 73-79

Abstract:

The proposed Bohai Strait tunnel is a challenging project, and penetration rate of tunnel boring machine (TBM) is one of the keys. This paper made a contrast between the Clem Jones tunnel in Australia and the Bohai Strait tunnel, and introduced the specific energy used in the Clem Jones tunnel. During the construction of the Clem Jones tunnel, researchers made the analysis and forecasted about the TBM's penetration rate using the specific energy, which was identical to the practical construction very well. This paper concluded that the specific energy can be used in the Bohai Strait tunnel as well as the Clem Jones tunnel, which was based on the comparative analysis of the Clem Jones tunnel and Bohai Strait tunnel.

Engineering 2023, Volume 29, Issue 10,   Pages 198-206 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.10.005

Abstract:

Transparent microwave absorbers that exhibit high optical transmittance and microwave absorption capability are ideal, although having a fixed absorption performance limits their applicability. Here, a simple, transparent, and thermally tunable microwave absorber is proposed, based on a patterned vanadium dioxide (VO2) film. Numerical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed VO2 absorber has a high optical transmittance of 84.9% at 620 nm; its reflection loss at 15.06 GHz can be thermally tuned from –4.257 to –60.179 dB, and near-unity absorption is achieved at 523.75 K. Adjusting only the patterned VO2 film duty cycle can change the temperature of near-unity absorption. Our VO2 absorber has a simple composition, a high optical transmittance, a thermally tunable microwave absorption performance, a large modulation depth, and an adjustable temperature tuning range, making it promising for application in tunable sensors, thermal emitters, modulators, thermal imaging, bolometers, and photovoltaic devices.

Analysis of Influencing Factors on Transmission Ratio in Magnetic Metal Belt Transmission

Luo Shanming,Miao Xiexing

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 73-77

Abstract:

Magnetic metal belt transmission is a new one in which the initial tension no longer solely, but together with the magnetic attraction force produces the friction force. The influencing factors on transmission ratio are analyzed and numerically simulated in this paper, such as effective haulage force, initial tension, magnetic induction intensity, center distance, diameter of the smaller belt pulley and angle of contact. The change laws of transmission ratio along with these influencing factors are studied. The results show that the transmission ratio of magnetic metal belt transmission increases when magnetic induction density, initial tension and center distance increases, and decrease when angle of contact and diameter of the smaller belt pulley increases. It is pointed out that the angle of contact and diameter of the smaller belt pulley can be reduced accordingly because of the effect of magnetic force, and therefore the transmission ratio can increase by 3〜4 times compared with general belt transmission.

Carbon Sequestration through CO2 Foam-Enhanced Oil Recovery: A Green Chemistry Perspective Perspective

Jennifer A. Clark, Erik E. Santiso

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 336-342 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.05.006

Abstract:

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) via carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding has received a considerable amount of attention as an economically feasible method for carbon sequestration, with many recent studies focusing on developing enhanced CO2 foaming additives. However, the potential long-term environmental effects of these additives in the event of leakage are poorly understood and, given the amount of additives injected in a typical CO2 EOR operation, could be far-reaching. This paper presents a summary of recent developments in surfactant and surfactant/nanoparticle-based CO2 foaming systems, with an emphasis on the possible environmental impacts of CO2 foam leakage. Most of the surfactants studied are unlikely to degrade under reservoir conditions, and their release can cause major negative impacts on wildlife. With recent advances in the use of additives (e.g., nonionic surfactants, nanoparticles, and other chemicals) the use of harsh anionic surfactants may no longer be warranted. This paper discusses recent advances in producing foaming systems, and highlights possible strategies to develop environmentally friendly CO2 EOR methods.
