The Impact of Cropland Spatial Pattern Change on Grain Production in China

Li Yuanyuan, Tan Minghong, Zhang Hongqi

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 5,   Pages 90-95 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.05.014

Abstract:

Cropland is the basis of grain production. In recent decades, the spatial pattern of cropland in China has changed significantly, which has caused some impact on grain production. Based on land cover data of 1990, 2000, and 2010, this study explored changes in the spatial pattern of cropland, and constructed a database with a spatial resolution of 1 km based on county-level agricultural statistics and soil organic matter data, which is the representative of crop productivity. The results show that: during the period from 1990 to 2010, drastic reclamation happened in Northeast and Northwest China while the cropland acreage decreased in Huang-Huai-Hai Plain; the main source of new cropland during the study period was grassland (46.9%), and the lost cropland was mainly converted to forest land (36.6%) in the first ten years and then to construction land (53.0%) in the following ten years; the changes in the spatial pattern of cropland have caused a decrease of 2.0% in the average crop productivity, and during this period, the construction land mostly occupied high-quality cropland, while the newly reclaimed cropland had lower crop productivity.

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 4,   Pages 29-36

Abstract:

Based on 60 years' data from 22 hydrological stations in China, the dynamic changes of precipitation and temperature are analyzed by statistical method, and the correlation between precipitation and temperature was evaluated comprehensively. The main conclusions are as follows: a. Precipitation shows fluctuation in recent 60 years in China. It increases in some years and decreases in the other years, without the unified changes.b. The temperature change also has been in fluctuation.During the recent 10 to 20 years, the date from most hydrological stations shows increasing trend, but the data of some hydrological stations have shown the decreasing trend. So, it is hard to obtain a conclusion of global uniform warming.c. From the interrelationship between precipitation and temperature, in some periods or years, there was more precipitation with lower temperature, but the opposite situation also existed. Accordingly, it is difficult to draw a conclusion that temperature increase can lead to precipitation uniform increase or decrease.d. The correlativity between precipitation and temperature at most of the hydrological stations did not show significant positive or negative correlation. It shows that precipitation and temperature are likely to be conditioned by some other significant factors respectively.e. From the hydrological and meteorological analysis of China as one part of the world, we cannot conclude that global climate has the trend of changing warm.

Strategies for Soil Fertility Improvement of Arable Land in China

Yingjie Hu, Xiangbin Kong, Yuzhen Zhang

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 5,   Pages 84-89 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.05.013

Abstract:

This paper systematically reviews the trends of soil fertility of arable land in China and puts forwards that the soil fertility improvement of arable land in China should realize the strategic change from single application of chemical fertilizer to the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, combine cultivation with preservation to maintain soil fertility, and implement spatial differentiation control. Moreover, this paper summarizes the ways to improve the soil fertility of arable land in China, including increasing the application of organic fertilizer, promoting straw returning to the field, resuming and promoting green manure cultivation, improving the farming conditions, and optimizing the layout of agroforestry networks. At last, this paper proposes policy suggestions of implementing high-standard farmland construction projects, soil improvement and restoration projects, grass-crop rotation projects, straw returning projects, and livestock and poultry manure application projects.

Research on the Strategy for Improving Cultivated Land Quality in China

Hongqi Zhang, Minghong Tan, Xiangbin Kong, Yongmei Xu, Erqi Xu, Erping Shang

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 5,   Pages 16-22 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.05.003

Abstract:

Based on a systematic analysis of changes in quantity and quality of cultivated land in China, this paper put forward an overall strategic thinking of realizing three strategic transformations in the cultivated land management from the aspects of quantity, quality, and ecology of the cultivated land. Five important measures, including enhancing the cultivated land quantity in China, curbing undisciplined growth of construction land, improving the fertility of cultivated soil, preventing and controlling heavy metal pollution of soil, and preventing and controlling agricultural film pollution, were proposed. It was also recommended that four major projects, namely middle- and low-yield farmland reforms, comprehensive improvement of rural land, comprehensive reparation of heavy metal pollution of soil, and soil and water conservation, sand prevention, and saline soil improvement, should be implemented as soon as possible.

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 5,   Pages 52-59 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.05.008

Abstract:

Improving regional accessibility is an important mean to carry out poverty alleviation and realize sustainable development in the Qinba Mountain Area of China. This paper studies the accessibility of central cities in the Qinba Mountain Area to surrounding urban agglomerations, and determines the spatial patterns of the region by using the high-speed transportation network identified in National Highway Network Planning (2013—2030) and China's Medium and Long Term Railway Network Planning. The study finds that with the development and construction of the rapid transit network planned by our country, three main radial urban corridors from Xi'an to Wanzhou, Xiangyang, and Luoyang, separately and three secondary urban corridors, namely, the Xi’an—Tianshui, Xi'an—Guangyuan, and Dazhou—Xiangyang—Nanyang—Luoyang corridors will be formed, in Qinba Mountain Area. These urban corridors will lead to the emergence of four vast green fields which are taking Longnan, Bazhong, Shiyan, and Luanchuan as the core. This paper suggests that the future spatial planning should establish the spatial order in the Qinba Mountain Area and arrange the urban corridors and the vast green fields properly to achieve a balance between protection and development.

Post-Impact Evaluation of SARS in 2003 on Transportation in China———Loss Estimation of28Provinces in China Based on Background-Trend-Line

Sun Gennian,Ma Lijun

Strategic Study of CAE 2007, Volume 9, Issue 6,   Pages 32-37

Abstract:

The SARS in 2003 is a public health crisis in China.  The passenger transport witnesses serious landslide and suffers a heavy loss.  In this article,  the loss of passenger transport and its regional difference impacted by SARS are analyzed and estimated. The loss of passenger transport is nearly 1. 007 billion person- times in 2003 impacted by SARS crisis, in which the highway transportation loss is 888 million, the railway loss is 105 million, the aviation is 16. 12 million and water carriage is 19. 43 million. As a short breaking event, it starts from March in 2003 for the crisis formation, breaks out in whole from May to June, and enters the decay and comeback from July to August,  and has a compensating from November to December after the crisis. Due to the difference in transport location and epidemic situation,  the loss of passenger transport impacted by SARS in 28 provinces in China can be classified into 4 types. Guangdong, Sichuan and Hebei suffer the most and the loss is over 100 million person-times. The relativity analysis is carried out based on the loss of transportation,  cardinal number in 2003 and the number of infect person of SARS,  and a new spatial forecast model is put forward for space forecast in transport crisis. The model shows that the marginal coefficient of transportation cardinal number is 0. 788 46,  the marginal coefficient of SARS patients is 0. 075 868.
