Abstract: Arc sprayed zinc (Zn) anode on concrete surfaces has been an emerging technology for protecting reinforced concrete structures from rebar corrosion in coastal environments. Many cathodic protection (CP) systems with arc sprayed Zn anodes will reach or exceed their design life in the near future and thus may function improperly or insufficiently, making it necessary to replace the aged anodes. However, prior to this study, little was known about the most effective profile for the concrete surface, for either new concrete or old concrete with existing Zn anodes removed. This work develops criteria to properly prepare the concrete surface before the application of new Zn anode. Experimental studies were conducted both in the laboratory and for a field structure in Oregon. Artificial neural network was used to achieve better understanding of the complex cause-and-effect relationships inherent in the Zn-mortar or Zn–concrete systems and was successful in finding meaningful, logical results from the bond strength data. The goal is to achieve strong initial bond strength of new Zn to concrete, which is essential for long-term performance of the CP system. The results from this case study suggest that it is necessary to adjust the anode removal and surface sandblasting based on the electrochemical age of the existing concrete. In all cases of sandblasting, minimize the exposure of large aggregates (e.g., those bigger than 19 mm in diameter).

Availability growth models and verification of power equipment

Abstract: The general availability growth models for large scale complicated repairable system such as electric generating units, power station auxiliaries, and transmission and distribution installations are presented. The calculation formulas for the maintenance coefficient, mathematical expressions for general availability growth models, ways for estimating, and fitting on checking the parameters of the model are introduced. Availability growth models for electric generating units, power station auxiliaries, and transmission and distribution installations are given together with verification examples for availability growth models of 320–1000 MW nuclear power units and 1000 MW thermal power units, 200–1000 MW power station auxiliaries, and 220–500 kV transmission and distribution installations. The verification results for operation availability data show that the maintenance coefficients for electric generating units, power station auxiliaries, transmission and distribution installations conform to the power function, and general availability growth models conform to rules of availability growth tendency of power equipment.

Research on the special lifting device for steel box girders of Sutong Bridge

Abstract:

Sutong Bridge is a cable stayed bridge with a steel box girder and a main span of 1 088 m. The steel box girder of main-span includes five portions: back span large unit, large block of pylon, standard girder, back span closure girder and middle span closure girder. Each back span large unit was fabricated by welding several deck segments together in factory, and was erected by floating crane. Due to the high of navigational clearance of the main bridge, the traditional truss lifting device couldn't satisfy the requirement of domestic lifting cranes for this kind of lifting height and weight. Hence, a kind of lighter lifting device for the erection of back span large units was accepted for this bridge. In this paper, the design and use of this lifting device is introduced.The upper structure used lifting gantry to install the standard girder segment by cantilever method. Because the bridge's navigation clearance is high, and the girder segment is wide and heavy, the meteorology and hydrology condition of the bridge district is abominable, and the requirements of long cable girder side pull-in, structure and performance propose high request to the lifting gantry. In this paper, key points of designing and using long cable pull-in angle adjustment device integrate into lifting gantry are introduced.

Quantitative Area Risk Assessment Method and its Application in Land Use Safety Planning for Major Hazard Installations

Abstract:

Quantitative area risk assessment (QARA) method and its subsequent application in land safety planning for major hazard installations was initially studied in this paper. The basic principle and indicators of QARA were briefly introduced. Calculating models for individual and social risk, procedure for assessment as well as calculating software were developed. The developed method was applied to one oil and gas storage area. Individual risk contour and social risk F - N curve were established by the developed calculating software. The results show that the individual risk and social risk of the storage area are both beyond the allowed risk standards due to huge reserves of LPG and the high people density. The method shows theoretical and practical value in land use safety planning for major hazard installations and also for other kinds of disasters.

Construction Technology of Shanghai Jinmao Building

Abstract:

Shanghai Jinmao building is the 3rd highest building in the world at present. The main building consists of reinforced concrete core wall and exterior structure steel frame. It is rather difficult to construct this edifice in such a poor soil condition in Shanghai. Proceeding from actual facts, Shanghai Construction Groups (SCG) makes efforts to conduct technology innovation, and absorbs advanced experiences domestic and abroad wildly. A unit of unique construction technique and a suitable managing system were developed with the growth of this building. SCG successfully solved a series of construction difficulties including deep-foundation work, mega-columns construction, high - altitude construction and erection, and so on. It only spent 4 years on this building, which set a high-speed record in construction history.
