This is the world's first ground verification system for a full-chain, full-system space-based solar power station (SSPS), named “the Sun-Chasing Project.” The system, located in the south campus of Xidian University, China, is composed of optical concentrating and photovoltaic cells, a transmitting antenna, a rectenna (microwave reception and rectification), and test and control subsystems, allowing it to realize space-orbit simulation, optic-focus and photoelectric conversion, radio frequency (RF) power transmission, and RF reception and rectification. As a whole, the project is at the international level, with the following points at the world-leading level: the OMEGA optomechatronics innovation design, microwave power wireless transfer (MPWT) efficiency (direct current (DC)–DC), microwave beam collection efficiency (RF–RF), power-to-mass ratio, and smart design of high-precision mechanical structures. With its achievements, this project provides a solid support for and will play a leading role in the next generation of MPWT and SSPS, with broad engineering applications.
